Malachi Toney, a four-star wide receiver from American Heritage High School in Plantation, Florida, took on quarterback duties for his team on Friday night against the Dillard Panthers. The switch happened after starting quarterback Dia Bell suffered a serious injury during the regional 4-4A semifinal game, as Toney did all he could to help his team get over the line.
The Patriots were down by 14-0 when Bell went down in the third quarter. In a desperate attempt to save their season, Mike Smith turned to his star receiver for inspiration, and the 5-foot-10 athlete did not disappoint. Toney rallied his team and went on to beat the Panthers, 24-14.
The receiver's exploits made the rounds on social media as several recruiting websites shared highlights of the game. Fans were amazed by the Patriots' comeback win as well as Toney's exploits as the team's signal-caller.
"@malitoney10 this was legendary," one fan commented.
"Damn they beat my alma mater but that's impressive as hell," another fan wrote.
"stop playing with my nephew," another fan said.
Malachi Toney finished the game with 14 yards and one touchdown. He also carried the ball four times for 21 yards. Although the team's running back, Byron Louis, did most of the heavy lifting, the four-star receiver's willingness and ability to slot in as the team's quarterback was commendable.
"Boy this goat shi," one fan said.
"THE MALI EFFECT," another fan commented.
"mali rlly like that tho," another fan wrote.
The four-star prospect is ranked No. 377 in the country and is the 58th-best player at his position in the Class of 2025, as per On3. He is also the 53rd-best overall prospect in the state of Florida.
Malachi Toney recommitted to Miami last month
The Miami Hurricanes had an interesting recruiting saga with Florida four-star wide receiver Malachi Toney. The prospect initially committed to the Hurricanes in August last year. However, he reclassified to the Class of 2025 in September and decommitted from Miami shortly after that.
Since his decommitment, the four-star recruit has visited Alabama and Kentucky. Miami kept in constant touch with him during his visits to other schools, and its pursuit eventually won out as he announced his recommitment to the program on Oct. 28.
Miami's 2025 class is ranked No. 10 in the country, per 247Sports. The Mario Cristobal-led program has landed 23 commitments, including 13 four-star recruits.
