The 6-foot-6, 295-pound prospect's pledge came shortly after he had decommitted from USC on Nov. 20. He had been pledged to the Trojans since Aug. 5 but began leaning toward Colorado after five-star quarterback Julian Lewis made the move.

Smith had committed to Auburn in April before backing off his pledge in June. His multiple changes of heart has drawn criticism from fans.

Carde Smith shares the reasons behind committing to Colorado

Carde Smith visited Colorado for the Buffaloes' 38-31 overtime win against Baylor on Sept. 21 and the 34-23 win over Cincinnati on Oct. 26. Those visits helped him discuss his potential with the school's coaching staff, including Deion Sanders and offensive line coach Phil Loadholt.

"Really just the environment around Colorado, it just feels like family more," Smith told Buff Stampede.

"Coach Phil is a real dude. Sitting down with him, he told me the ins and outs of Colorado. Seeing that he actually played at that position and was really the best in his time, I really couldn't turn that down. Plus, the opportunity to play early."

Smith is Colorado's second top-300 offensive tackle commit over the past two classes, following Jordan Seaton (2024).

"I just want my shot. And when I get it, they are going to feel me," Smith said. "I feel like I can go in there, and I feel like I can compete with anybody."

Colorado holds 15 commitments in the 2025 class, ranking No. 29 in the nation and No. 2 in the Big 12.
