The Michigan Wolverines have been a hot topic of discussion lately due to their pursuit of flipping five-star quarterback Bryce Underwood from LSU. While flipping Underwood remains a top goal, Sherrone Moore's Wolverines scored a big win by flipping four-star cornerback Shamari Earls from Kirby Smart's Georgia Bulldogs on Friday.
Earls announced his Georgia decommitment decision on X, writing,
"After deep thought and reflection, I have made the decision to decommit from the University of Georgia. I want to thank coach Kirby Smart and coach Donte Williams for all that they have done for me. This decision comes down to personal reasons and finding the best possible fit for me both academically and athletically."
The 6-foot-2, 205-pound cornerback had initially flipped his commitment to Georgia from South Carolina in July, but his recent visit to Michigan appears to have been a game-changer. Earls was in Ann Arbor on Oct. 26 for Michigan’s 24-17 victory over Michigan State and the experience helped cement his decision.
Michigan cornerback coach LaMar Morgan played a big role as Earls' lead recruiter. He also notified his commitment news in the post:
"I am beyond thrilled to commit to the University of Michigan to continue my academic and athletic career. I am excited for the future and to be a part of coach Sherrone Moore's vision for sustained success and coach Morgan's vision for the secondary to be the most competitive and disciplined secondary in the country.
"Michigan is an extraordinary place and I am humbled to continue the great legacy of those who have come before me."
With Earls' decommitment, Georgia’s 2025 class dropped to 23 commitments and moved from the No. 1 to No. 4 spot nationally. He is the seventh recruit to decommit from Georgia's 2025 cycle, joining Rashad Johnson, Jadon Perlotte, Christian Garrett, Micah Debose, Jabree Wallace-Coleman, and Justus Terry. The class is now left with one cornerback in four-star Jontae Gilbert.
Michigan Wolverines' 2025 class recruitment update
With Shamari Earls' commitment, Michigan’s 2025 recruiting class now includes 18 prospects and has jumped from No. 16 to No. 10 in national rankings. He joins an already solid defensive group alongside safety Ivan Taylor, cornerback Jayden Sanders and safety Kainoa Winston.
However, Moore and his coaching staff are leaving no stone unturned to keep the recruiting momentum going. Besides planning to flip Bryce Underwood from LSU with a huge NIL deal, the Wolverines are pursuing flip targets such as NC State wide receiver Jamar Browder, Duke linebacker Bradley Gompers and Colorado cornerback Alex Graham.
The Wolverines are vying for top uncommitted prospects like five-star linebacker Nathaniel Owusu-Boateng, with the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine giving them a 9.9% chance of securing his commitment. Four-star cornerback Graceson Littleton, who decommitted from Clemson on Friday, is also on the school's radar.
