Kirby Smart's Georgia Bulldogs are on the verge of bidding farewell to redshirt senior quarterback Carson Beck. He is expected to enter the NFL draft next year, and a search for his replacement has been ongoing for a while.
Many Dawgs fans would have loved to see five-star quarterback Julian Lewis head for Athens. With that option out of the picture, however, there are speculations the Bulldogs are looking elsewhere for a suitable Beck replacement.
Recruiting insider On3’s Steve Wiltfong reported on Monday that Georgia is now looking to recruit homegrown talent three-star prospect Hezekiah Millender.
Millender, who has been verbally committed to Boise State since August, was present on Saturday for the Bulldogs' victory over UMass. Wiltfong also confirmed that the Clarke Central (Athens, GA) quarterback received an offer from Kirby Smart.
Millender has been important for Clarke Central this season, completing more than 60% of his pass attempts for 1,798 yards and 25 touchdowns. He has also rushed for an additional 606 yards and 12 touchdowns.
Can Hezekiah Millender emulate Carson Beck at Georgia?
Should the No. 51 quarterback per On3 Rankings decide to flip to Georgia, he may have to compete for the starting quarterback spot. The Bulldogs have three quarterbacks on their roster who would be aiming for the spot: Gunner Stockton, Jaden Rashada and Ryan Puglisi.
Otherwise, Millender may take a similar route to Carson Beck's in Georgia. Beck redshirted his freshman year at Georgia and was a backup in the quarterback room that had Stetson Bennett, JT Daniels and D’Wan Mathis. He remained a backup for two seasons before finally earning the starting spot in 2023, leading the Georgia Bulldogs to a 13-1 season.
In his first season as a starter, Beck completed 302 passes for 3,941 yards and 24 touchdowns. He also rushed for 116 yards and four touchdowns. He has continued to prove pivotal for Georgia this season with 255 of 392 pass attempts completed for 3,132 yards and 23 touchdowns.
The Bulldogs are No. 2 in the Southeastern Conference with a game to play against Georgia Tech before the College Football Playoff. Smart's men last won college football's biggest prize in 2022 and it would be a befitting way to end Beck’s career at Athens.
Beyond this season, however, Smart needs a reliable quarterback to continue Georgia's stay at the top of college football.
