Unranked defensive lineman Waylon Wooten from Grayson High School in Loganville, Georgia, has started turning heads after just one week of game film. The sophomore's impressive performances on the field have earned him attention from several college programs, including the South Carolina Gamecocks.

Shane Beamer's program joined the race for Wooten’s commitment by extending an offer for their 2027 recruiting class. On Saturday, South Carolina defensive line coach Travian Robertson officially presented the offer to him. The 6-foot-2, 300-pound prospect shared the news on X (formerly Twitter), writing:

South Carolina is still building its 2027 recruiting class and currently has no committed players. However, the coaching staff isn’t wasting any time in identifying top talent for the future.

Wooten is among several promising defensive linemen receiving attention from the Gamecocks. The program also extended offers to four-star recruits Griff Galloway and Valdin Sone, as well as other unranked prospects like Nate Carson and Elijah Brown.

Waylon Wooten's athletic profile

Waylon Wooten's Grayson Rams kicked off the 2024 season with a narrow 20-19 loss to Collins Hill on August 16. However, the school hasn’t lost any matches since then and is sitting 4-1 following Week 5.

Wooten’s contributions on defense have been vital to Grayson's success. Throughout five games this season, Waylon Wooten recorded 12 tackles (four solo tackles and eight assisted tackles) including two tackles for losses, one sack, two quarterback hurries and one pass deflection.

In addition to his on-field performances, Wooten's recruitment stock has been on the rise. This summer, major programs like Florida and Auburn extended offers during his visits. On August 31, he attended Florida's game against Miami, where the Gators fell 41-17. A week later, he was at Auburn's game against California, witnessing another close loss, 21-14.

Waylon Wooten's consistency and dominance on defense are likely to draw even more offers as the season progresses. If he can maintain his current form, he could soon find himself ranked among the nation’s top recruits in the 2027 class.
