On Thursday, November 28, NewJeans held an emergency press conference to announce their departure from their agency, ADOR. Their departure was followed by the end of the 14-day ultimatum they gave ADOR along with the members' demands.
Some of these demands, raised on November 13, included the agency taking action against the alleged workplace harassment towards Hanni, the undervalue of NewJeans' success, etc.
However, given that ADOR hasn't met any of the demands raised by the members, the group stated that they will be terminating their contract with the agency, as stated in the ultimatum. One of the reporters at the press conference asked the members how they would be proceeding with their promotions without the agency's support.
To this, NewJeans expressed that they intend to work with Min Hee-jin, the former CEO of ADOR. While they expressed that there hasn't been any separate discussion about this with Min Hee-jin, they believe that she shares the same thoughts as the group. Here's what Danielle stated about the reporter's question:
“Being free means working with people we like. If Min Hee Jin wants the same, we would love to work with her.”
However, when this news landed on the internet, netizens were skeptical about the same. Many were unhappy with the girls' persistence and choice to work with Min Hee-jin. Given that the group has constantly mentioned their former CEO and previously fought for her return to ADOR, fans are also slightly concerned that the members were allegedly brainwashed by Min Hee-jin.
Here are a few fan reactions:
"What witchcraft did she do to have them hooked like that ? I just want the girls to be safe"
"If she actually cared about them, she would have tried to do this in court instead of going public and dragging the girls to unnecessary stress." said a fan on X
"I’m not sure why they support this woman..? She must be doing smth great for them we just aren’t seeing" added a fan
"Honestly they should not, it‘s good they left HYBE and ador but MHJ ain‘t good for them" commented a netizen
While some fans were against the group's decision to work with Min Hee-jin, several others were supportive.
"It’s amazing to see NewJeans’ unwavering support for Min Heejin" stated a fan
"Their bond is unbreakable, and it’s clear they value the strength of working together." added another fan
"That would be great both are experienced and best in their business" said an X user
"her love and care for nwjns is probably a reason why these girls are still on her side" said a netizen
ADOR releases statement in response to NewJeans' emergency press conference
On November 28, NewJeans held an emergency press conference to announce their departure from ADOR. The members explained that prior to the conference, they received an email from ADOR regarding the group's decision to terminate their exclusive contract with the agency.
Here's what Minji said regarding the same:
"They sent their response an hour before and we confirmed it. The contents of the email were serious. The email stated that 14 days was not enough time, that they regret there was no communication with ADOR, and that there were matters they couldn't address because they weren't ADOR's doing."
She continued:
"However, they took no substantial action and we had made these demands back in September as well. The email was full of lies and excuses, and was merely a stalling tactic. Therefore, we are terminating our exclusive contract as of midnight on the 29th."
Following the same, ADOR released a response statement to NewJeans' emergency press conference. They explained that they regretted to see the press conference be held without the members reviewing the agency's email. Regardless, they requested the group to continue their activities under ADOR as the contract still stands valid.
Here's what the statement read:
"As a party to the agency contract, ADOR has not breached the contract, and unilateral claims of a breach of trust are not grounds for termination. The contract between ADOR and the members of NewJeans is still in effect, and we hope that you will continue to work with ADOR in the future."
The statement continued:
"We have asked the artists to meet with us several times, but it hasn't worked out, and we hope that we can have an open and honest conversation with them now. We will do our best to support the activities of our artist NewJeans and help them grow as global artists.”
On the other hand, the members explained that they will be terminating their contract with ADOR as of November 29, 12 am KST.
