What is Jeanne du Barry about?

Written by Maïwenn, Teddy Lussi-Modeste, and Nicolas Livecchi and directed by Maïwenn, Jeanne du Barry is a historical drama. Its official synopsis reads:

"Johnny Depp stars as King Louis XV in the story of the entrancing Jeanne du Barry (Maïwenn), a French peasant woman whose meteoric rise through the royal court to become the King’s last mistress creates a scandal of epic proportions. Based on a true story."

The gist when deciphered, points clearly to the real-life story of the growing relationship between King Louis XV and Jeanne du Barry, a young- woman who was way below his stature. Irrespective of their socio-economic differences, the two developed a relationship despite extreme opposition from those in court.

She soon became one of the most hated figures at court and she and King Louis XV's relationship became one of the most scandalous relationships to exist in history.

Everything to know about Maïwenn's experience working with Johnny Depp

Based on Maïwenn's accounts of working with Johny Depp, it seemed like the writer, director, and producer did not have a good time. Speaking to Independent, Maïwenn recollected her experience of working with Depp and said:

"I have to be honest. It’s difficult to shoot with him... all the crew were scared because he has a different kind of humour and we didn’t know if he was going to be on time, or if he was going to be OK to say his lines... I mean, even if he was there on set, on time, the crew were afraid of him.”

She also added how sometimes Depp would come up with his own version of the script and would expect Maïwenn to make changes to the story which she was not a huge fan of. In the interview, she talked about this one time he did the same and Maïwenn did not like the gesture. Speaking about the incident, she exclaimed:

“Johnny came with a new version of the script and I wasn’t happy with it. It didn’t work... So I shot it without making the changes he wanted… which he took as an insult.”

In the same interview, she also accepted that she cut some of Depp's scenes and dialogues. She said:

"There was no time for rehearsals. I asked for time but, for whatever reason, he wasn’t available... He had a coach, but he couldn’t work with her beforehand. So. OK. I discovered his accent wasn’t perfect. So a few times I decided to cut his lines. But that also happened with the French actors. It happens!”

Jeanne du Barry will be released in the United States on May 2, 2024.
