Zoe Kravitz recalled that her decision to live with her rocker father, Lenny Kravitz, was "very hurtful" for her mother, Lisa Bonet, after their divorce.

The actress-turned-director opened up about her childhood in the latest feature with Esquire, published Wednesday, August 14, 2024. Recalling the time when she moved from Miami to live with her dad in New York after her parents broke up, she said:

"I think it was very hurtful that I moved away from her to be with my dad and my dad wasn't even there."

Thinking back now, Zoe Kravitz admitted that she wishes she had been more appreciative of what Lisa Bonet was doing for her. The Blink Twice director added that her mom only wanted to preserve her innocence and creativity, and when she moved to New York, her dad wasn't even there because he shortly left for a tour.

Zoe Kravitz talked about what it was like to grow up with two famous parents

Zoe Kravitz lived with her mom, Lisa Bonet, for the first decade of her life before moving to Miami to be with her dad, Lenny Kravitz, whom she had only seen several times a year before. Talking about what it was like growing up with her parents, she dished on having to be careful with the people around them. She said:

"I can smell [other people's true intentions] out pretty quickly. I had to when I was a kid, because he [Lenny Kravitz] didn't"

The Batman star mentioned that her dad was "really trusting" of people and while she thinks that it's a sweet trait, people sometimes take advantage of the rocker. But she's different, she said, because she "can tell exactly what someone wants."

Moving with her dad at 11, and getting newfound freedom because he was rarely home, made Zoe Kravitz grow up faster than most children her age. However, that isn't something she holds against her dad. The actress noted that it wasn't because Lenny Kravitz didn't care about her, the rocker just "cared about different things."

The actress also opened up about the novelty of her freedom in New York ultimately wore off, "just like it happens in the movies." Once she learned about the reality of the lifestyle, she realized that there were some consequences she wasn't previously privy to.

She also talked about the stark contrast between her life with her dad and with her life with her mom. Lenny Kravitz's visit, she said, is like a "whirlwind of a completely different universe," while living with Lisa Bonet, her life was "really quiet" and "really simple."

In related news, Zoe Kravitz's psychological thriller Blink Twice, starring her real-life partner, Channing Tatum, as the billionaire Slater King will be released in the US and UK movie theaters on August 23.
