Story, production, and music
Guadagnino, a devoted reader of the novel, initiated the film's development by collaborating with screenwriter Justin Kuritzkes to adapt the narrative. The book's unfinished elements are further elaborated upon in the screenplay, which seeks authenticity by consulting Oliver Harris, a scholar of William S. Burroughs.
Additional scenes were filmed in Quito, Ecuador, following the commencement of production in Rome in April 2023. Jonathan Anderson of Loewe's costume design contributes to the film's authenticity of the era.
The atmosphere of Queer is enhanced by music composed by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross. The Spanish-language song Te Maldigo, performed by Omar Apollo, is included in the score. This collaboration adds emotional depth that complements the film's themes of isolation and yearning.
With Daniel Craig and Drew Starkey portraying nuanced characters, the film delves into themes of love, identity, and connection. It is scheduled for limited theatrical release in the US on November 27, 2024.
