Wicked is a fantasy film adapted from the stage musical titled Wicked, composed by Dana Fox and Winnie Holzman, which is inspired by Gregory Maguire's 1995 novel of the same name. The storyline closely resembles the events in L. Frank Baum's The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, and its following series.

A joint production of Universal Pictures and Marc Platt Productions, the movie is being released in two parts to remain authentic to the original story. Led by Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, Wicked: Part I was released theatrically on November 22, 2024.

In Wicked, Glinda does not initially possess powers like her friend Elphaba does. When the two arrive at Shiz University, they are both selected for Madame Morrible's seminar, where Glinda slowly discovers her true strengths. Though Glinda is referred to as Glinda the Good, she is not connected to having magical powers in the initial movie.

Viewers can expect the story to delve deeper into the character of Glinda and possibly explore her special powers in Wicked: Part II. The next installment is set to be released on November 21, 2025.

What is the story of Glinda in Wicked?

The story of Wicked introduces Glinda as the Good Witch; however, in this context, the title witch doesn't imply any magical powers. Instead, in the Land of Oz, it signifies a social position and administrative power, reflecting the political position of the beholder.

Wicked: Part I is narrated by Glinda, who retells the story of Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West. Throughout her life, Elphaba has suffered mocking and insult due to her appearance. Her powers stem from both the mortal and magical worlds, as she is born from an affair between Melena, the ex-wife of Governor Frexspar Thropp, and a traveling salesman.

During her childhood, Elphaba's green skin caused her to be ostracized by other students at the university. Glinda helps her overcome her insecurities, which becomes one of the primary reasons for the growth of their friendship.

As per a Good Housekeeping article published on November 23, 2024, Wicked serves as a prequel to The Wizard of Oz storyline. In the Wicked books, Glinda does possess some power, though she is too clumsy to handle it. The stage musical, on which the movie is based, showcases events including the Scarecrow, Dorothy Gale, the Cowardly, and Tin Man.

Act 2 of the musical included events from Shiz University. Considering this storyline, it can be comprehended that Wicked: Part II is likely to merge with The Wizard of Oz Universe. The next movie is likely to take place ten years after the initial movie.

“Why does emotional availability scare you so?”

She also expressed her joy at being called by her complete name, Ariana Grande-Butera, which she had as a child, during her first appearance in Wicked on Broadway. As reported by Deadline on November 24, 2024, Wicked: Part I managed to successfully gross over $ 120 million in its opening week. The movie has a rating of 8.2 stars out of 10 and is rated 97% on Popcornmeter on Rotten Tomatoes.
