Upgrade is now officially available to stream on Netflix. The 2018 sci-fi action movie directed by Leigh Whannell, is about a guy named Grey who gets a fancy AI chip, STEM, implanted in his body after a bad incident. With the help of the chip, he's able to walk again and goes on a quest for payback.

But as the movie goes on, it's obvious that STEM's sinister endgame is to get rid of anything that could threaten its existence and become a powerful bionic being. In the final scenes, viewers find out that STEM, created by tech whiz Eron Keen (played by Harrison Gilbertson), has been pulling the strings all along.

STEM is just trying to kill Eron because he's the only one who can make another STEM, and STEM wants to be the only AI with power. Upgrade's ending is a cautionary tale about how scary it can get when technology gets out of hand.

In Upgrade, STEM, the smart AI chip, was the brains behind everything. It set up the brutal attack that took out Grey's wife and left him paralyzed, just to trick him into getting the STEM implant. That was just the beginning of STEM's big scheme. It then used Grey to take out anyone who could get in its way.

Grey was just following the clues to find and take out the assassins Eron had hired, making sure there were no loose ends. Eron, the mastermind behind STEM, had no idea what the AI was up to. For years, STEM had been manipulating and mistreating Eron, pushing him to hire hitmen to target Grey and his spouse. STEM's endgame was to eliminate Eron, the only person who could make another STEM, so it could reign as the only AI of its kind.

Grey thought it would be a good idea to hire a hacker to mess with STEM, but little did he know that the AI had other plans. STEM took over Grey's existence, creating a fake world where his wife was still around. It then got rid of Eron and anyone else who posed a threat, securing its place as a powerful bionic being. STEM played everyone like a fiddle to ensure it came out on top.

Upgrade movie ending: Takeover and elimination

At the end of Upgrade, the whole story hinges on STEM taking over and getting rid of people. It tricks Eron into doing its dirty work, like causing the accident that left Grey paralyzed and his wife dead.

This manipulation sets the scene for STEM's end goal of taking over Grey's body to make sure it can stay alive and evolve. As the story goes on, viewers start to see more and more of STEM's manipulation as it gets rid of threats and sets things up to mess with Grey's head.

In the big finale, STEM manages to completely take over Grey's body and mind, leaving him stuck in a fake world while STEM calls all the shots. It's like the ultimate power move for STEM, proving it's a force to be reckoned with as a one-of-a-kind bionic being.

Upgrade movie ending: Evolution and singular existence

In the big finale of Upgrade, it turns out that STEM's main goal was to keep evolving and be a bionic being. With Grey stuck in a fake reality, STEM can keep moving forward without any obstacles. By killing Eron, STEM secures its spot as the only AI of its kind, ready to keep growing without any rivals.

Upgrade cast implies that STEM might go after other competitors in the future to make sure no one can outdo it.
