The Caribbean Elite Group celebrated the ‘Voices of Caribbean’ music last Thursday, August 29, with the 2024 Caribbean Music Awards (CMA). The annual run of the prestigious rewards was hosted at Brooklyn's Kings Theatre in New York.
The 2024 Caribbean Music Awards was hosted by Majah Hype and Spice and was lined with performances from Leadpipe x Jus-Jay King, Skinny Fabulous, and Ravi B. The event honored over 32 musicians and saw Skinny Fabulous emerge as the biggest winner with three awards to his name.
The Saint Vincent-born musician won the Male Soca Artist of the Year award and two joint awards for his collaboration with Trinidad’s Nailah Blackman. He shared the Soca Video of the Year and Collaboration of the Year awards with Nailah for the 2023 hit Come Home.
The 2024 Caribbean Music Awards also honored Jamaican music icon Marcia Griffiths for 60 years of her influential music career. Griffiths, who is a former member of Bob Marley's music group, was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Thursday event. She has worked on Tony Gregory's You're Mine, Bob Marley's Oh My Darling, Jeff Dixon's Words, and Bob Andy's Always Together.
2024 Caribbean Music Awards: Highlights and winners
The 2024 Caribbean Music Awards began on Thursday at 8 p.m. ET with the Red Carpet event. The star-studded event featured numerous Caribbean music icons, including Lady London, Alison Hinds, Marcia Griffiths, DJ Cassidy, and more.
The 2024 CMA hosts, Spice and Majah Hype, began the event with a formal greeting and opening monologue before announcing the first award. The Jamaican singer, Ras-I, was the first winner of the night and received the award for Best New Artist (Reggae).
The CMAs celebrated the achievements of Pumpa with the 2023 Soca Impact Award, 450 with the 2023 Dancehall Impact Award, and Mortimer with the 2023 Reggae Impact Award. The event also saw Masick and Buju Banton receiving the Album of the Year awards for Generation of Kings and Born for Greatness, respectively.
The 2024 Caribbean Music Awards celebrated notable female musicians such as Shenseea, Lila Iké, and Patrice Roberts with Artist of the Year awards. Valiant, Romain Virgo, and Skinny Fabulous were the male musicians to receive the Artists of the Year award.
The prestigious event featured performances from musicians like Alaine, Christopher Martin, and Pressure. Alaine performed an electrifying set of the 2007 hit, No Ordinary Love, which was followed by Martin's performance of Mama and Cheaters Prayer.
The reggae musician, Pressure, was the next to take the stage and had the audience grooving to Love and Affection. Pressure's performance of the 2007 hit received a standing ovation from the audience. Dexta Daps, Mical Teja, and V’ghn were some of the other artists to perform at the 2024 Caribbean Music Awards.
Machel Montano joined Majah Hype later on at the event to honor Trinidadian calypso vocalist, Mighty Sparrow, with the Calypso Award Honor. The other honorees of the CMAs included Alison Hinds for the Elite Icon Award, Cedella Marley for the Legacy Award, and Sherwin Gardner for the Gospel Award Honor.
The 2024 Caribbean Music Awards closed with a tribute performance for Marcia Griffiths, who was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award. Alaine, Aeisha, Tosh Alexander, and Nadine Sutherland moved the audience as they performed a special tribute to Griffiths.
