On Tuesday, August 6, Drake dropped 100 GB of unreleased content containing new music, photos, and studio footage on a website titled 100gigs.org. While fans came across three new singles namely It's Up, Housekeeping Knows, and Blue Green Red, there were also videos that were related to the rapper's life experiences.
In one folder titled 'Hotline Bling,' Drizzy posted three clips which showed him in what seemed like a recording session. He was heard talking about how he came up with the 2015 hit track Hotline Bling. According to the rapper, he had nicknamed an unidentified woman "hotline bling" since her cell phone rang constantly after they had hooked up.
In the clip, he said:
"We used to be in bed together—we just finished f—king and her phone would be blowing up. So I saved her name in my phone as 'Hotline Bling.' That's always been her name on my phone."
For the unversed, "hotline bling" literally means a phone ring as per Urban Dictionary.
The rapper further said that he believed it could, in fact, be his artist name. In the clip which was seemingly filmed back in 2015, Drizzy mentioned talking to the woman the same day when he reportedly told her that her nickname would be the title for his then-upcoming single. He added:
"I was talking to her today, I was like, 'Yo your name, your nickname is such a good title for something.' And then I just told her today, I was like, you know I did a song called 'Hotline Bling,' that's crazy."
Drake further revealed that he originally wanted Future to feature on Hotline Bling
Fans have been super excited since Drizzy dropped the surprising 100 GB of content on the website that included several new tracks and videos related to his life experiences. As mentioned, one of those folders included information about the 2015 track Hotline Bling.
While he spoke about what inspired him to choose the title, he also explained that he wanted Future in the song. The videos featured Drake vibing to the track during its production and discusing the same project. In one of the footages, he was heard saying:
"It’s melody but it’s a vibe. When I was writing it, I wrote it as a Shy Glizzy song. That’s why I was asking if we should put Future on this sh*t."
Hotline Bling became quite a popular song back in 2015. It became a part of Drake's fourth studio album Views. Soon after its release, the track ranked No. 2 on the US Billboard Hot 100. It maintained its position for five consecutive weeks. The song also made it to the list of Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs of All Time at No. 373.
Rolling Stone reported that this song got Drake the Grammy Award for 'Best Rap Song' and 'Best Rap/Sung Performance.' The music video was directed by Director X and the inspiration behind the song was American artist, James Turrell.
