Bob Bowman shared how they worked on small details that helped him dominate the circuit for over a decade. Along with a rigorous training routine, Bowman shared that Michael Phelps was very disciplined and had a never-give-up mentality during tough training sessions, which provided him with an edge during competitions.
Michael Phelps' coach used him as an example while speaking to students at Arizona State University. He shared how Phelps achieved unparalleled success as a swimmer through immense hard work, dedication, and conviction towards his plans. He revealed how growth can be an uncomfortable process, and Phelps used to put himself under pressure during training sessions so that he could be prepared to compete on the global stage against some of the best swimmers of his generation
“Michael learned skills so that under pressure, he could perform. Don’t try to make everything perfect for yourself — be tough on yourself," he said.
Bowman shared that the journey towards success will have a lot of ups and downs, and it isn't something that would be instantaneous; however, it is important to be positive at all times and take up every challenge with a competitive spirit.
“It isn’t a straight line to success. We didn’t just have an idea, a dream, and then just go directly toward it. Success has a lot of ups and down, backward and forward. Over time, you move in the direction you want to be,” he added.

Phelps shared that Bob Bowman would often present them with challenges that prepared them to deal with any conditions as well as handle intense pressure during major races.
"Every single day, our coach Bob is giving us certain challenges to prepare us for the moment those lights come on. The most pressured situations. That’s why Léon and I have been able to rise above the rest," he said.
The most decorated Olympian also shared how Bob Bowman continues to push the boundaries with his current set of swimmers and stated French prodigy Leon Marchand's dominance as an example.
