History was scripted at the ongoing Paris Olympics on Friday when seven national records and a world record were set at the Stade de France in the preliminary round of the mixed 4x400m relay.The United States secured their place in the finals after shattering their own world record in the first round of the mixed 4x400m relay on Friday, July 2. The American quartet of Vernon Norwood, Shamier Little, Kaylyn Brown, and Bryce Deadmon clocked 3:07.41 seconds at the Stade de France, shaving 1.39 seconds off their previous world record finish of 3:08.80 seconds.In addition to the US, a handful of other teams set new national records. The hosts France finished second with a time of 3:10.60, followed by Great Britain with 3:10.61. The Belgium team clocked a time of 3:10.74, the Netherlands finished with 3:10.81, Jamaica with 3:11.06, Poland with 3:11.43, and Italy with 3:11.59. All these teams made it to the finals of the Paris Olympics, scheduled to take place on Saturday.Of these teams, France, Great Britain, Belgium, and Jamaica set new national records. With a record-breaking feat under their belt, the American team now looks poised to dethrone Poland, the reigning Olympic champions.Speaking about their flying start at the Paris Olympics, Shamier Little, who ran the second leg of the race, stated (as quoted by ESPN):"I always knew we were going to run fast. And we talked about, it's gonna take a record to get a medal. But it took a record to win our prelim. So I was just excited."Little made a slight fumble while taking the baton from Vernon Norwood, about which she added:"I had to realize I wasn't where I was supposed to be, re-locked in where I was supposed to be. I just know I took a little momentum into it so I can get it back, and that was kind of the push I needed."She also said that all four of them share great camaraderie as they head for the finals of the event at the Paris Olympics, and they are getting better with each passing race.
