After missing out on qualifying for the Paris Olympics, Jordan Burroughs is back on the big stages of wrestling. Competing at the World Team Trials, the American qualified for the 10th World Championships and soon after penned a short note for his redemption.
Back in 2022, Burroughs had announced that 2024 would be his last year of competition. After his loss to Jason Nolf in the finals of the U.S Olympic Trials earlier this year, many fans had assumed that they'd seen the last of the wrestler.
However, in August earlier this year, the 2012 London gold medalist stated that he'd be back on the mat for the World Team Trials, to make it to his 10 World Championships.
Now, Jordan Burroughs has lived up to his word and he celebrated his redemption journey in the simplest way possible. Taking to Instagram, the wrestler shared a picture divided into two slides, with the text ‘he’s done…it again’.
Burroughs captioned the photo,
“God is good.”
At the World Team Trials, the American was simply spectacular. He opened his campaign in Omaha, Nebraska against Sam Beckett, getting the ball rolling with a dominant 13-0 victory. From there, he went on to face off against NCAA Champion Levi Haines, beating the Nittany Lion 4-1. The semifinals saw Burroughs reign supreme over Alex Dieringer before he defeated Chance Marsteller 3-0, 6-3 in the summit clash.
When will Jordan Burroughs compete at the World Championships?
The World Championships are slated to take place between October 28 and October 31 in Tirana, Albania. Jordan Burroughs, who wrestles in the 79 kg weight class, will begin his campaign on October 30 with the qualification rounds. The semifinals take place later the same day, with the finals scheduled to begin at 6 PM local time on October 31.
For Burroughs, this appearance in Tirana marks his 10th outing at the World Championships. He has medaled in each of his previous nine appearances and will be eager to keep that winning streak alive. The American made his debut in the event in 2011, striking gold on his first attempt. He went on to win gold five more times, winning the 74 kg titles in 2013, 2015, and 2017, and the 79 kg titles in 2021 and 2022.
In 2014, 2018, and 2019 Jordan Burroughs claimed bronze medals at the World Championships but failed to make the team for the competition in 2023.
