"Do I go to Microsoft or make the Olympics?" - Olympic champion Valarie Allman recalls career-shaping decision

2024 Paris Olympics gold medalist Valarie Allman recently opened up about her career-changing decision that led to a paradigm shift in her career. This comes just a few months after she clinched her second Olympic gold medal in Paris.

Besides being one of the most formidable discus throwers in the US circuit in recent years, Allman also holds a Bachelor of Science degree in product design. Owing to this, Allman was offered a job by the software giant, Microsoft.

However, Allman stuck to her athletics career and let go of the Microsoft offer to pursue her dream of making a career in discus throw. Since then, the Stanford graduate has earned prestigious laurels for her country including two World Championship medals.

Recently in an interview with World Athletics, Valarie Allman shed light on this decision that has led her to become one of the most successful discus throwers in recent times. She said (via World Athletics):

"I came to a ‘Y’ in the road of, do I go to Microsoft? Or do I pursue this crazy dream of trying to become a professional athlete and make the Olympics? I realised there’s only one time in your life that you can go after these athletic things.”

Valarie Allman clinched her fourth consecutive Diamond League title in Brussels

Competing after her gold medal-winning campaign at the French capital, Valarie Allman produced another impressive performance at the 2024 Diamond League finals in Brussels.

The 29-year-old registered a throw of 68.47m in her third attempt to clinch the top position on the podium and win the Diamond League title for the fourth time in her career.

She defeated the 2024 Paris Olympics silver medalist Feng Bin and the 2020 Tokyo Olympics bronze medalist, Yaime Perez to win the title in an elite field in Brussels. Fing and Perez eventually finished second and third in the Brussels event with throws of 67.49m and 66.96m respectively.

With this victory in Brussels, Valarie Allman kept her unbeaten streak intact in the Diamond League meets in this 2024 track and field season. Commenting on this, the 29-year-old said (via Wanda Diamond League):

"I feel so happy, I really dreamed of a season like this, I really didn´t think it would be possible to have an undefeated season."

The Colorado native has earned podium finishes in Xiamen, Suzhou, Eugene, and Paris.
