2023 US Outdoor Track and Field Championships gold medalist, Nia Akins recently commented on her participation at the Athlos NYC 2024 on Thursday (September 26) at the Icahn Stadium, New York. This comes just a month after her disappointing campaign at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
In the 2024 inaugural Athlos meet, Akins competed in the 800m event. However, the 26-year-old couldn't produce the best performance as she finished last in the race after clocking a run time of 2:01.32. Paris Olympics 800m medalists Tsige Duguma and Mary Moraa produced impressive performances and clinched the first and second positions in the event with run times of 1:57.43 and 1:58.05, respectively.
Despite a disappointing outing at the Icahn Stadium, Nia Akins was touched by the welcome she received during the event from the staff members of the track meet. Following the conclusion of this women's only track meet she took to her Instagram handle to share her gratitude towards the Athlos NYC 2024.
In her post, Akins thanked the staff members of Alexis Ohanian's track meet and also shared some kind words for this women's only track initiative. She wrote:
"Couldn’t dream of a more wonderful experience than Athlos NYC to cap off a great year. I felt so incredibly seen and valued by the event and staff as a woman/woc in this sport. Thank you, I didn’t know how bad I needed it. Here’s to new beginnings, celebratory endings,"Akins wrote.
Nia Akins finished eighth at the 2024 Zurich Diamond League meet

Competing in the fourth Diamond League of her 2024 track and field season, Nia Akins had an underwhelming performance in Zurich as she finished eighth in the Women's 800m event. This came after her two tenth-place finishes in the Lausanne and Silesia leg of Diamond League 2024.
The 26-year-old clocked a run time of 1:59.85, far from her season-best time of 1:57.36 that she registered at the US Olympics Track and Field trials. Her Kenyan counterpart and Paris Olympics bronze medalist, Mary Moraa won the event after touching the finishing line in 1:57.08.
This was the last Diamond League event of the season for Nia Akins as she didn't feature in the final event in Brussels thus ending her 2024 track and field campaign without a single podium finish in the Diamond League meet. Her best outing came at the Eugene leg of the Diamond League meet where she managed a fourth-place finish (run time of 1:57.98).
