Reigning triple Olympic champion Gabby Thomas recently shared a humorous response to Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone moving out of the Olympic Village. The two athletes were roommates during the Paris Games and played a pivotal role in securing a historic gold medal for the United States in the 4x400m relay.
In August, McLaughlin-Levrone made history at her third Olympic Games in Paris by defending her 400m hurdles gold medal and setting a new world record for the sixth time. She stormed through the Stade de France, defeating Dutch rival Femke Bol and compatriot Anna Cockrell to secure a 50.37-second victory, shattering her own world record. The 25-year-old then helped the US team to their eighth consecutive 4x400m relay gold with a new national record of 3:15.27 seconds.
In contrast, Thomas, participating Thomas, in her second Olympics, won three gold medals: the 200m in 21.83 seconds, the 4x100m relay, and the 4x400m relay alongside McLaughlin-Levrone.
McLaughlin-Levrone and Gabby Thomas were roommates at the Paris Olympics, but the former moved out of the village later, with Thomas being joined by the combined events prodigy Chari Hawkins. Speaking about the hurdler moving out, Thomas jokingly said that she was not upset and added that it was fine.
"My roommate so we, it was track so you stick with your sport and Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone was my roommate but she did move out of the village, it's cool, it's fine, I'm not mad or anything," Thomas said (via Ali on the Run Show on Apple Podcast) [33:33 onwards]
"She came in so hot...almost ran me over" - Gabby Thomas reflects on her baton exchange with Sydney Mclaughlin-Levrone at Paris Olympics
At the Paris event, Sydney Mclaughlin-Levrone set a world-leading and American record time of 47.71 seconds on her second lap in the 4x400m relay event to help bring the gold medal home. She then passed the baton to Gabby Thomas for the third leg. Recalling her experience running alongside the hurdler, Thomas said:
"For that relay, we didn't get to practice at all, so that was my first time ever doing an exchange with Sydney, and I didn't realize how she was going to be coming in that fast. There is nobody in the world who can finish a 400 that fast. I've never seen that before in my life; she came in so hot I was like, she almost ran me over." (via Why Not Me? Podcast) [35:36 onwards]
In addition to their track pursuits, both Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone and Gabby Thomas recently shot an ad commercial for their sponsor, New Balance.
