Usain Bolt and Tyson Gay were two of the most fierce competitors of their time, as they always delivered terrific showdowns while competing against each other. The latter recently made his feelings known on running during the same era as Usain Bolt.
Bolt is one of the best sprinters, and Gay was one of the few contemporary athletes who could keep the Jamaican on the edge. The sprinters have competed in multiple races together, and the American in his career could only nab two wins while squaring off against Bolt. He won a 100m final in the 2010 World Championships and the 200m final at the 2007 World Championships.
On the other hand, Bolt went on to register consecutive wins in his career, including back-to-back victories at the Olympics in both the 100m and 200m events. After years of rivalry on the track, the American recently opened up about what it was like to run during the same era as Bolt.
In a conversation with FloTrack, Tyson jokingly said that it sucked to be running in the same era as the Jamiacan, and along with this, he highlighted how it felt to be in the second position.
"Yeah, it sucked. But it definitely, you know sucked in a good way. My heart always goes out to Usain Bolt, but at the same time, like, when you get introduced as a number two, so I mean. But, it was cool man, because like you say, I've had that record for so long, man, and I am sitting here and enjoying the sport, waiting for the people to run faster than me and faster than Usain, I'm patiently waiting, because I know what's going to happen to just that's the way it is," said Gay.
"But during that time, man, it definitely was a blessing to even run those times with injuries and trying to regroup and stay focused and my coach, etc,. etc. So, it was cool in that sense, but it also sucked, like when you were trying to get to number one, but you had, you know, you saying obviously, taking over."
Usain Bolt opened up about losing to Tyson Gay in the initial days of his career
Usain Bolt sat for a conversation with Justin Gatlin and Rodney Green in their podcast, 'Ready Set Go,' where he opened up about losing to Tyson Gay in 2007. He revealed that he was a junior athlete then and was used to winning easily; however, when he experienced a loss against the elite athletes, he spoke about talking to his coach, Glen Mills.
The Jamaican revealed that the coach told him that talent alone will not be fruitful, but constant practice and sharpening of the skills are what help in delivering results. Talking about how his hard work wasn't enough, the 38-year-old said:
"I went to my coach, I was like, what's happening, and he goes listen, everybody, on this circuit has talent, you need to understand that. Who's going to work at their talent the most is going to be the best. You know what I mean, and that's when I started trying to do better and to work a little more, and I did enough but it wasn't enough," Usain Bolt said. (12:26 onwards)
While Usain Bolt currently holds eight Olympic gold medals, Tyson Gay holds none. He and his team won the silver medal in the men's 4x100m relay team at the 2012 London Games; however, they were stripped of the medal because the American tested positive for a banned substance.
