Jakob Ingebrigtsen's father Greg is set to stand trial after being charged with physical and mental abuse towards his children. The latest development comes after the Olympic champion reportedly provided testimony for the charges against his father.
Jakob and his brothers, Henrik and Filip, were coached by their father since their childhood. However, they accused him of using violence as a tool in a statement in October 2023 after parting ways with him a year earlier.
"We have grown up with a father who has been very aggressive and controlling and who has used physical violence and threats as part of his upbringing. We still feel discomfort and fear which has been in us since childhood," they wrote.
The Norwegian police launched an investigation into the allegations and charged Greg with having physically and mentally abused his daughter. While the coach has denied all the allegations against him, the Norwegian newspaper VG has reported that he will stand trial in 2025.
The newspaper also reported that Jakob Ingebrigtsen had testified against his father over the charges and claimed he was hit in the head several times by him. He also alleged that abuse lasted for 15-30 minutes during one of the several incidents he and his siblings were subjected to physical and mental abuse.
VG also reported that testimonies from other family members supported Jakob's allegations and the public prosecutor had asked for 30 court days in connection with the case. While there's uncertainty over whether the Olympic champion will be present during the court proceeding, he didn't make any comments on the latest development.
