Simone Biles revealed the exact moment when she realized she could be an Olympian as a kid in the second season of her Netflix series, Simone Biles Rising. This docuseries was released on October 25, 2024.
The series is directed by Katie Walsh and gives a deeper insight into Biles' life after she released her book, Courage to Soar. It dives into the struggles the gymnast faced in her personal and professional life and how she overcame each one of them. One of the main highlights of the second season is the 27-year-old's participation in the Paris Olympics.
It covers all the aspects of how Biles prepared for the Paris Olympics, highlighting hard work and determination. Along with this, the series also revealed the moment when she realized that she could become an Olympian. Simone Biles unveiled the fact that it took her various years to realize that she was good at gymnastics.
After practicing gymnastics in her backyard for a long time and honing her skills in the gym, the gymnast said that she realized she could go to the Olympics after she started making the national teams.
"It took years being in the sport to realize I was good. I was very wild. Very funky. Couldn't straighten my legs, point my toes, all of that good stuff," said Simone Biles. "They knew I had power, but they were like, 'It doesn't matter if she has power if she doesn't learn to harness it and to correct her form.' It was a little bit of backyard gymnastics. I grew into it. I would say like in 2013, whenever I was going to camps and making national teams, then I was like, 'Whoo, maybe I could go to the Olympics.'" (20:42 onwards..)
Her grandfather Ronald Biles also recalled the comments Biles received from the judges when she was a kid:
"I've probably been to at least a hundred or more of her competitions from the time she started when she was six until now. I remember the first one she had. The judge making the comments, 'Well, we have to give her the medal with her muscles. We just have to give her a medal.'"
Director of Simone Biles' Rising revealed the gymnast's attitude during the Paris Olympics
In a recent interview with Fox News, Katie Walsh, the director of Simone Biles Rising, opened up about how the 27-year-old was comfortable with her while gearing up for the Paris Olympics, and this eased the entire process of capturing the gymnast's time during the events.
"I think that the beauty of our relationship is that she feels comfortable to be who she is in whatever moment," Walsh said. "So, we were with her as she was getting ready her final moments in a hotel room before she was leaving to go compete, and the tension, it was very tense."
Walsh also revealed that Biles sometimes becomes really 'serious and intense' before competing.
"And I am so grateful that she let us in for those moments, because those are hard moments to allow just other people into your space, and she did. We were able to just be there, and it's never a negative thing with her. She's just sometimes really serious and really intense because she's about to compete."
Simone Biles is currently on the Gold Over America Tour and will be performing next on October 27 in Cleveland.
