Noah Lyles clocked 14.41 seconds to win the 150m dash at the Atlanta City Games. He thus equaled Tyson Gay's American record from 2010 in the process and was agonizingly short of Usain Bolt's world record of 14.35 seconds, which was set in 2009.

Noah Lyles, 26, is an indomitable force in 2024, with a couple of 60m and 100m podiums already. He outdid record holder Christian Coleman in the 60m at the 2024 USATF Indoor Championships, followed by a silver finish at the World Indoor Championships. Two of his 100m wins came from the Tom Jones Memorial and Bermuda Grand Prix, followed by a stellar 4x100m win at the World Relays.

However, the 26-year-old unlatched his 150m dominance at the recently-concluded Atlanta City Games. His winning time was only 0.06s behind the world record set by Usain Bolt in 2009.

Noah Lyles spoke to the media after the race and said that in his head, he was ready to clock 9.6 seconds since the athlete whose 150m US record he equaled, Tyson Gay had a personal best of 9.69 seconds.

"This means I’m going to run faster than any other year. I mean Tyson Gay's a 9.69 runner. In my head I’m like, 'Shoot, I’m ready to go 9.6.’ That’s what I’m thinking. I had a great start — first two steps, I was with everybody. By the fifth or sixth step, I was cleaning everybody. By the time we were at 50m, I was already like, ‘Alright, I’m putting this race behind me, let’s keep it going,'” Lyles said.

In the aforementioned interview, Noah Lyles spoke about his practice before the race at the Atlanta City Games.

"We were doing 60s and they were by far the fastest times I've ever.. I'm going to put it like this, they were Tyson Gay 9.7 times, 9.7 low times. And, that's why I believe in it," the 26-year-old said.

Noah Lyles has had an impressive 2024 so far, winning almost all races he has competed in so far. In the outdoor season, the American won at the Tom Jones Memorial and the Bermuda Grand Prix, clocking 10.01 seconds and 9.96 seconds, respectively.

He was also part of the 4x100m relay team that impressed at the World Athletics Relays to clinch a spot in the Paris Olympics.
