Simone Biles is the most decorated gymnast to ever compete in the sport, but that hasn't stopped her from being subjected to nerves before big competitions. Recently, the American opened up about how she felt before the Olympics, emphasizing that with competitions as important as the Games, emotions play a major role for an athlete.
For Biles, 2024 was the year of redemption. Three years ago, at the Tokyo Games, the 27-year-old had been forced to pull out of various events due to her mental health struggles, leading to a long hiatus from the sport.
She qualified for the Paris Olympics after some impressive performances on the trials.
ith a singular competition carrying such importance, Simone Biles opened up about the emotions she felt ahead of the quadrennial event in her new Netflix documentary.
“We're heading to Paris, we're stronger, we're smarter. But an Olympic year is stressful, there's a lot of emotions rather than just gymnastics, and you never know what's going to happen. You feel like you're going to throw up, cry, pee yourself, like just all the things. I've worked 27 years for this. Nothing sets your heart on fire like being so determined for a goal and you have only one chance," Biles said.
Simone Biles celebrates 2024 Olympic campaign
For Simone Biles, 2024 has been a year of one victory after the other. The American’s season got off to a strong start at the Core Hydration Classic where she won the all-around title with a score of 59.500. She also walked away from the Classic with wins in the floor and vault.
From Hartford, Biles moved on to the National Championships, where she claimed a record ninth all-around title. She also won gold in each of the other apparatuses. A few weeks later, the 27-year-old dominated at the US Olympic Trials before heading to the 2024 Games.
In Paris, Simone Biles won the team, all-around and vault golds, while settling for silver on the floor. After her campaign, she celebrates her victory with a simple message on Instagram, posing with her medals and writing,
“More than my wildest dreams.”
After the Paris Olympics, Biles has now embarked on the second edition of her ‘Gold Over America' Tour. The latest show of the tour will take place in Philadelphia's Wells Fargo Center on October 4.
