In a recent episode of The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City, Angie Katsanevas found herself at the center of controversy after making an offhand comment involving hearing aids. The remark sparked a discussion about sensitivity and accountability, as cast members dissected the implications of her words.

Angie herself has since reflected on the incident, acknowledging and recognizing the potential impact of her statement on individuals who face hearing challenges. Sharing her thoughts with Mary Cosby in The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City after-show, she said,

"It was a bad, bad choice of words. I shouldn't have brought Meredith into it."

What was said that turned out to be a bad comment in The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City

During a conversation in The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City involving Angie Katsanevas and her fellow castmates, Angie referenced hearing aids in a manner that many found inappropriate. Specifically, she mentioned another castmate, Meredith Marks, in a way that sparked discomfort among the group, saying,

"Borrow Meredith's hearing aids, turn them up and hear me one more time."

Angie later explained in The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City after-show that she had been speaking to Bronwyn but inadvertently brought Meredith into the discussion, saying,

"I wasn't even thinking about Meredith. My intention was to take a jab at Bronwyn. I was so mad at her because I felt like she was trying to make me look bad and twist my words and lie about me."

One cast member, Mary Cosby, talked to Angie about her remark, explaining how it might feel if the roles were reversed. She pointed out that making light of someone needing hearing aids could be hurtful, especially to individuals who rely on such devices due to sensory challenges. Mary stated:

"If somebody said that about you—if you opened up to the group and you say, ‘You know what? I can’t hear you guys. I have to actually put some little tubes in my hair so I can hear what you guys are saying’—how would you feel?"

Angie acknowledged that her comment was inappropriate. Reflecting on the incident, she admitted that it was indeed a "bad choice of words and that she shouldn't have dragged Meredith into the conversation.

She further expressed gratitude for Mary’s candid feedback, stating:

"That’s what I love about Mary. Like, she’ll really tell me. She’ll tell me what I say, whether it’s right or wrong. And I appreciate being held accountable because it came across wrong."

Angie clarified that her intentions were not malicious. She suggested that if Meredith knew her better, she would understand that the remark was not meant to be intentionally hurtful.

Meredith's perspective about the comment

Meredith Marks, the focus of Angie Katsanevas' controversial comment, shared her thoughts on the matter during The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City after-show, emphasizing her commitment to normalizing discussions around disabilities like hearing loss. Meredith expressed disappointment, stating:

"Making fun of someone's disability, that's not my vibe. That’s like something I had an issue with, and I was brave enough to talk about it. So I got hearing aids. Most people are terrified to talk about that."

Meredith revealed that her decision to openly discuss her experience with hearing aids was driven by a desire to reduce stigma. She highlighted how many individuals, particularly older adults, avoid seeking help for hearing loss due to embarrassment. Her frustration stemmed from feeling that Angie’s comment undermined these efforts. She explained:

"To me, I thought it was really, really important to highlight that this isn't okay and normal, and to make fun of a disability just took away from everything I was doing."

Meredith also questioned the broader implications of stigmatizing disabilities:

"Does she not want her parents or her father, if he can’t hear, to get a hearing aid? Going through life and struggling when I’m at a dinner party because I can’t hear that well is not great. I’d rather be able to enjoy it and hear."
