What happened to the Fatal Destination subject, Emily Jean Schwarz

As reported by VT Digger, the Fatal Destination subject, Emily Jean, was a 22-year-old woman who worked as a nurse. Joseph worked as a tattoo artist from Northfield, New Jersey, and the couple had just finished their first wedding anniversary.
People reported that the couple took a vacation trip to Bolton to celebrate their anniversary, and the couple was traveling in a camper van. As reported by WCAX, on October 15, 2021, the couple indulged in a heated argument inside the van, following which Emily Jean was shot twice by Joseph Ferlazzo to death. Joseph then reportedly dismembered Emily's body.

WPTV reported that Joseph returned from the trip alone and claimed that Emily left after they indulged in an argument. Emily Jean's family soon reported her disappearance.
Investigation on the murder of the Fatal Destination subject Emily Jean Schwarz

As reported by People, when authorities from the Vermont State Police interrogated Joseph Ferlazzo, he confessed to killing his wife, Emily Jean. WPTV reported that when investigators reached the crime scene, they found the dismembered body parts of the Fatal Destination subject, Emily, inside the camper van's bathroom.
According to a report by NBC 5, Joseph Ferlazzo argued that he killed Emily as an act of self-defense because she was going to shoot him.
"I was holding my Glock, and she started coming up at me, and I just fired," Joseph Ferlazzo said.

The news outlet also reported that during the trial, it took the jury less than two hours to find Joseph Ferlazzo guilty. When Joseph was proven guilty of committing the murder and dismembering the body, he came out with a new testimony. Joseph said,
"I have one flash of memory where I cut into her leg with a knife," he further added, "It made me sick."
Chittenden County State's Attorney Sarah George asked for a 50-year-to-life sentence for Joseph Ferlazzo. WPTV reported that Emily Jean Schwarz's family filed a wrongful death suit, in which Joseph was ordered to pay $1.5 million.
Per WCAX, in April 2025, the Vermont Superior Court Judge John Pacht reached a decision where Joseph Ferlazzo was sentenced to 42 and a half years in prison.
