Netflix presents the Trainwreck series, an eight-part anthology, with the first episode featuring Travis Scott's deadly Astroworld Festival in 2021. The new documentary unpacks the harrowing events that claimed the lives of those who attended the concert after the crowd surged during Scott's performance.

Ten people died at the Astroworld music festival: eight of those who passed away during the tragedy died on the night of the concert. Meanwhile, the other two were taken to the hospital, but they sadly passed away from their injuries in the following days.

Trainwreck: The Astroworld Tragedy is the first of the eight documentaries examining disastrous events. It rehashes the catastrophe with one-on-one interviews with survivors, family members of those who died, festival staff, and paramedics.

What is Trainwreck: The Astroworld Tragedy's main narrative?

Trainwreck: The Astroworld Tragedy explores the disastrous 2021 music festival that claimed the lives of ten festivalgoers and injured hundreds of others. The documentary also includes interviews with organizers and authorities, including the officers from the Houston Police Department, medical rescuers, and the 911 calls made during the disastrous event. This episode of Trainwreck also features unseen footage from Travis Scott's infamous festival, according to Netflix Tudum.

The documentary series is directed by Yemi Bamiro, who has previously directed the documentaries Reggae Fever: David Rodigan, Super Eagles '96, and One Man and His Shoes. Bamiro tells Netflix the inspiration for the documentary:

"Our desire to tell this story stemmed from a very simple question—how can 10 people die at a music festival and no one knows how or why such a catastrophic tragedy happened?"

On what they aim to accomplish with the documentary, Bamiro said:

"The objective for our film from the very start was to challenge all the misinformation that had become synonymous with Astroworld 2021."

Hanna Poulter produced and co-directed the new documentary. She's known for Wanted: The Escape of Carlos Ghosn.

What happened at Astroworld 2021?

The music event was founded by rapper Travis Scott in 2018 and attracts tens of thousands of people annually. However, during the November 5, 2021, event, what was supposed to be a lively event to celebrate Houston's rich hip-hop culture turned deadly.

The event, which was held at NRG Park in Houston, evoked much excitement from the crowd, resulting in attendees pushing toward the stage and causing a crowd surge. Hundreds were injured, and eight people were found dead at the scene. Two more died in the following days at the hospital, and according to Netflix, those who perished ranged in age from 9 to 27.

The tragedy brought significant attention, especially towards Travis Scott, Live Nation, who was the co-organizer of the event, as well as the crowd control issues at the event. Per Netflix, numerous lawsuits were filed, including ten wrongful death lawsuits. However, those have been settled outside of the court by the rapper and Live Nation for undisclosed amounts.
