The murder of Ryan Poston in October 2012 took his girlfriend and killer, Shayna Hubers, through two murder trials. Shayna had showed up at Ryan's condominium without notice and shot him six times with his handgun.

Two psychiatric evaluations yielded that she had been suffering from borderline personality disorder but the jury dismissed the case of insanity and sentenced her to life in prison during her second trial. Shayna Hubers is presently incarcerated at the Kentucky Correctional Institute for Women in Pewee Valley, Kentucky.

The Snapped episode 5 of Season 19 showcases Ryan Poston's murder as it re-airs on July 23, 2024, at 11 p.m. EST on Oxygen. The episode originally aired on December 11, 2016. The official synopsis reads,

"A beautiful college student and a successful lawyer look like the perfect couple, but a shooting reveals the shocking secrets in their relationship. After reviewing the interrogation tapes a jury must decide whether to believe claims of self-defence."

How many murder trials did Shayna Hubers go through?

According to WLWT, Shayna Hubers was arrested for Ryan Poston's murder and held on a $5 million bond. She was charged with the murder in December 2012 and she pled not guilty to the charges on January 16, 2013. Her first murder trial began on April 13, 2015, wherein the prosecution tried to argue that Shayna was obsessed with Ryan.

However, the defense tried to put forth the angle of self-defense and asserted that Shayna Hubers was a survivor of domestic abuse. Prosecutor Michelle Snodgrass made use of text records to establish that Shayna had been showing obsessive traits. According to CBS News, Snodgrass shared,

"He laid there helpless and she walked over and shot him again and again and again. That's not self-defense."

Poston's family took the stand during the trial to talk about how Ryan walked on eggshells around Hubers. Moreover, Hubers' cellmate at the Campbell County Detention Center, Cecily Miller, testified at the trial saying that Shayna had exhibited carefree behavior while she recounted the crime, per ABC News. Miller reportedly said,

“[Hubers laughed] about shooting [Poston] in the face and giving him the nose job he always wanted.”

Miller also added that Hubers mentioned that she wished to plead insanity but would rather go ahead with battered wife syndrome and domestic abuse.

The jury comprising twelve members reached a verdict after five hours of deliberation on April 23, 2015. Shayna Hubers was sentenced to 40 years in prison with the possibility of parole after 20 years. Judge Fred A. Stine reportedly shared that he had considered a longer sentence and refused to believe that Hubers was a survivor of domestic violence.

Shayna Hubers appealed for a new trial as the defense stated that they were not allowed to present evidence and witnesses. Additionally, one of the jurors turned out to be a convicted felon due to which her appeal was granted on August 25, 2016.

After multiple delays, Hubers faced her second trial on August 8, 2018, wherein she was sentenced to life in prison with the chance of parole. Hubers is presently incarcerated at the Kentucky Correctional Institute for Women in Pewee Valley, Kentucky. She will be eligible for parole in 2032, according to WCPO-TV.
