Morgan Freeman rejoined the cast of Special Ops: Lioness season 2 when the series returned to Paramount+ on October 27, 2024. While his character only appeared in the first season of the American spy thriller series for two episodes, Freeman's Edward Mullins is taking on a much bigger part in season 2. He joins other returning stars and series regulars like Zoe Saldana and Nicole Kidman.
Morgan Freeman's character has been kept in the loop on all the comings and goings of the elite Lioness team and their missions in the espionage thriller. As fans see him play the US Secretary of State Edwin Mullins in the series regularly, certain quirks of his character have kept viewers intrigued—like his hand gloves.
As seen in Special Ops: Lioness season 2, Mullins is always wearing a black glove, and it's because Morgan Freeman has suffered serious injuries after a devastating car accident in 2008. However, it's not the first time the actor sports a black hand wear, as he's been using the glove for several years now.
Why does Morgan Freeman wear a glove in Special Ops: Lioness season 2?
In Special Ops: Lioness season 2, Morgan Freeman plays the US Secretary of State Edwin Mullins, often sitting across Nicole Kidman's Kaitlyn Mead and Michael Kelly's Byron Westfield. Sometimes, Zoe Saldana's Joe joins them to discuss the many high-stakes missions of the Lioness program.
One of the staples of his character is the long black glove he wears on his left hand, which is a compression glove he now uses after a major car accident in 2008.
In August of that year, Freeman got seriously hurt after the car he was driving reportedly flipped over several times on the road near his home in Charleston, Mississippi.
He was conscious when the paramedics arrived, but the rescuers reportedly had to use hydraulic cutters to get him out of the car. The Special Ops: Lioness season 2 star allegedly had a broken arm and elbow, plus minor shoulder damage, from the accident and had to go into surgery to help correct the damage.
The Oscar-winning actor told People, via Who, in 2010 about the nerve damage that left him wearing gloves in Special Ops: Lioness season 2 and other TV and movie appearances. He said:
"I suffered nerve damage and it hasn't gotten better. I can't move it... If you don't move your hand, it will swell up."
The compression glove he's now wearing is supposedly to help keep the blood flowing in his left hand, which will prevent swelling, as he mentioned. Freeman also told Esquire in 2012 about the "excruciating pain" he still feels in his left hand after the accident. It was later identified as fibromyalgia, which she described to Esquire, saying:
"Up and down the arm. That's where it gets so bad. Excruciating."
That said, the Hollywood actor is taking the pain in stride as he continues to do things he enjoys doing, like golf, which she told the magazine that he does "one-handed." He also continued working on film and television since his accident.
London Has Fallen, Ben-Hur, Now You See Me film series, Angel Has Fallen, and Gunner are only a few of the projects he's worked on since 2008. He's also now a series regular in Special Ops: Lioness season 2 as Edwin Mullins and is set to reprise his role as Thaddeus Bradley in the third installment of Now You See Me.
