Sunny Episode 9 will be released on August 28, 2024, on Apple TV+. The official synopsis of the upcoming episode, titled Who's in the Box?, reads:
"Sunny looks inside herself."
Episode 8 of this Apple TV and A24 series ends on a bittersweet note: while Suzie finally meets Zen, Masa and her only son, the titular homebot seems to find itself in some danger as the episode closes.
Additionally, Episode 8 reveals important plot and character elements. For instance, for the first time in Sunny, the backstory of Masa is explored. At the same time, Hime is drawing closer and closer to getting her hands on The Dark Manual. Sunny Episode 9 may shed more light on these developments.

What to expect from Sunny Episode 9?
Episode 8 contains a prolonged flashback sequence that exposes the past of Masa. Narrated by Hiromasa, Masa’s biological father, the flashback shows how Masa had to grow up without a father’s love since his original father had abandoned him and his adoptive father never showed him much affection.
Further, the latest episode also lays bare how Masa turned into a robotics engineer. Hiromasa also reveals to Suzie how Masa, a few days before the alleged crash of Flight 405, brought Sunny to him so Hiromasa could hand over the same to Suzie at some point.
Since Masa’s past has been clouded in mysteries so far, these revelations have a strong effect on Suzie. The upcoming episode could reveal more of the secrets surrounding Masa, such as whether he actually designed The Dark Manual or what the genuine purpose of the Manual is.
Sunny Episode 9 could also delve more into the quest of Hime as she desperately tries to get hold of the Manual. She believes obtaining the same would give her an upper hand over Jin, who, much to Hime’s dismay, is the present leader of the yakuza after her father’s demise.
Further, the connection between Masa and Hime remains unclear as of now. Did they know each other well? While the episodes so far have implied that they did, the next episode might provide a clear answer to that question.
Relationships among human beings, and those between the human and the non-human, have been a prominent theme in Sunny. The relationships among Suzie, Mixxy and the titular homebot have undergone several changes across the series. Episode 9 might continue the trend, or bring the micro-conflicts between the characters to a point of resolution.
Noriko’s life in the present day gets no mention in Episode 8, even though her past features amply during the episode’s lengthy flashback. Sunny Episode 9 might show how she is currently doing in prison, since Episode 7 hinted that not everything there would go her way as she had imagined.
