A brief recap of The Institute season 1 episode 5

The Institute season 1 episode 5 showcases what happens in the Back Half after Nicky graduates to the dreaded place. He participates in Sparkler Night, where all the children combine their telepathic powers to remotely carry out an assassination.

Luke and Avery find out that the institute cremates the kids after sending them to the recovery room, and they are planning to send Luke to the Back Half soon. The protagonist gets another shock when he learns that the institute killed his parents, leaving him orphaned.

Determined to bring the killers to justice, he escapes the facility at night with Avery and Maureen's help. She gives him a flash drive containing information about the sinister activities inside the facility, hoping to share it with the world.

Meanwhile, Tim digs near the Red Steps and catches the attention of Sigsby and Stackhouse. When the latter visits him and warns him to back off, Tim realizes something sinister is going on and goes back to the Red Steps looking for answers.
