The Sympathizer is a historical black comedy drama miniseries based on a Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, “The Sympathizer”, written by Vietnamese-American author Viet Thanh Nguyen. Directed by Park Chan-wook and written by Park Chan-wook and Don McKellar, the series premiered on April 14, 2024, on HBO.
The series follows the story of the life of the Captain, a North Vietnamese plant embedded within the South Vietnamese army. As the Vietnam War nears its end, he's forced to flee to the United States alongside his General. He finds refuge within a community of South Vietnamese refugees.
However, he continues to secretly spy on them and report back to the Viet Cong, simultaneously struggling between his original loyalties and newfound life.
