In the 9-1-1 series, actor Gavin McHugh plays Christopher Diaz, Eddie Diaz’s son. His sudden exit in the season seven finale had reportedly shocked fans. The show explores the journey of the character, who suffers from cerebral palsy. In season two, his mother Shannon died in a car accident. This sent Eddie and Christopher on a journey of grief and heartache.
In season seven of the 9-1-1 series, Christopher's father is still grieving his late wife's death. After he meets a woman named Kim who has an uncanny resemblance to his late wife, he begins an affair. At the time, Eddie was dating Marisol. Christopher catches his father cheating on Marisol with Kim.
Why did Christopher leave Los Angeles in the 9-1-1 series?
As soon as Christopher catches his father cheating on his girlfriend, he locks himself in his room. He refuses to open the door despite his father's repeated attempts to talk to his son. Eddie, meanwhile, is racked with guilt. He even calls his best friend Buck to help him deal with the situation.
Fans of the 9-1-1 series know Buck has helped Eddie raise Christopher. His son has almost become a part of the Station 118 family.

In the interim, Christopher has called his grandparents and asked them to come to Los Angeles to pick him up. He wants to move in with them to El Paso, Texas.
Initially, Eddie resists Christopher's move to Texas. However, after Eddie has a chat with his parents, he decides that the best thing to do is to let him go.
Before saying goodbye, Eddie lets his son know that he loves him. He says he hates that he's moving to Texas but lets him know he's always free to come back to L.A. whenever he likes.
Talking about Eddie and Christopher's relationship in the 9-1-1 series, Ryan Guzman, who essays the role of Eddie, told The Hollywood Reporter:
"I think there is a full acknowledgement that Eddie is not the best part of Christopher’s life anymore, that he does not offer the best and healthiest version for Christopher anymore. That’s not only crushing to Eddie, but now the acceptance of that fact is something that I don’t think Eddie has really leaned into [yet]. We will explore it in season eight."
What will happen to Christopher and Eddie?
In the 9-1-1 series' season eight fall finale, fans saw Eddie make the difficult decision to move to Texas to be closer to his son. He had been missing him all season. After his absence, viewers got a glimpse of Christopher when Eddie made a FaceTime call to him.
After the call, Eddie had an honest chat with Brad that led to his decision to move to Texas.

The 9-1-1 series showrunner Tim Minear spoke to TVLine about the fall finale. When asked by the interviewer if the firefighter plans to move on from Station 118, he said:
"So when you see him on that call, it’s like, ‘Holy cow, he’s grown up!’ That’s the feeling Eddie’s having too. He’s slipping through his fingers and needs to do something. But also Christopher seems to be thriving, so does Eddie really want to yank him out? That’s what he’s wrestling with. How does he reconnect with his kid and do it in his kid’s best interest."
Minear confirmed that, at least for now, Eddie is "dead serious" about moving on.
