Actor Jamie Foxx recently reflected on his life's events in the past couple of years. Taking centre stage while accepting the 'Ultimate Icon' award from Stevie Wonder at the 2025 BET Awards held on June 9, 2025, a teary-eyed Foxx opened his speech by chanting God's name.
Further hinting at the stroke he suffered in 2023, Foxx continued his speech by exclaiming how the "in memoriam" segment during the awards show could have been dedicated to him if things had gone downhill. The actor and comedian said:
"When I saw that 'In Memoriam,' I was like, 'man, that could've been me.' But I don't know why I went through what I went through, but I know my second chance I'm not going to turn down."
Jamie Foxx delivers a heartfelt speech while accepting the Ultimate Icon award at the 2025 BET Awards
Jamie Foxx did not hold himself back while accepting the coveted 'Ultimate Icon' award at the 2025 BET Awards. While reflecting on the experience of suffering a hemorrhagic stroke in April 2023, Foxx emotionally expressed his gratitude for being able to be physically present on the stage to receive his award.
As aforementioned, in his speech, Foxx spoke about the fear of having his name mentioned in the category honoring people from the industry who have passed away in recent years. Additionally, he spoke about his faith in God and how that helped him in the most difficult of times. Talking about how he wishes to use the "second chance" he has been given, Foxx said:
"I'm not going to turn [that] down. I have so much love to give. I told [God], I said, 'Man, bro, just give me one more crack at this'... I said, 'Whatever reason you put this on me, I promise I'mma do right.' And I'mma do right in front of y'all."
What had happened to Jamie Foxx in April 2023?
In April 2023, news started circulating about Jamie Foxx being gravely ill. As reported by CNN at the time, his daughter Corinne Foxx corroborated the claims on April 12, 2023, via her Instagram, where she mentioned that the actor had encountered a “medical complication” and was “on his way to recovery.”
While Corrine did not mention the nature of the "complication," many believed that Foxx had suffered a stroke. The speculations became even more intense when ABC News reported on May 16, 2023, that Foxx was allegedly in a rehabilitation centre that specializes in internal and external head injuries, including stroke.
Regardless, for the longest time, even when he made public appearances later on, Foxx did not address the rumors of him having a stroke. However, in Jamie Foxx: What Had Happened Was..., his comedy special that was released on Netflix on December 10, 2024, Foxx finally revealed the medical emergency he had faced.
He mentioned that he had suffered a brain bleed, which had led to a stroke and his eventual hospitalization back in April 2023. Humorously referring to the entire ordeal and the events that led to it, Foxx said:
“April 11, I was having a bad headache, and I asked my boy for Aspirin. I realized quickly that when you’re in a medical emergency, your boys don’t know what the f**k to do.”
