In March 2016, Adrian Demblans and Jeremy Macauley were arrested for the murders of Carlos Ortiz and Tara Rosado, who were found murdered at their home on October 15, 2015.
On December 19, 2017, a judge sentenced Jeremy Macauley to two consecutive life sentences. Adrian Demblams on the other hand was sentenced to 10 years in prison after pleading guilty. As per The Real CSI: Miami Adrian Demblams was released from prison in early May 2022. Meanwhile, Jeremy Macauley is still serving his prison sentence.
In 2020, the charges against Jeremy Macauley’s conviction were reversed on appeal after the judges ruled that evidence had been incorrectly excluded as revealed on The Real CSI: Miami. Jeremy had been awaiting a new trial, and in May 2024, he was once again found guilty of the murders of Carlos Ortiz and Tara Rosado and has remained in prison since.
The Real CSI: Miami season one episode one will re-air on CBS on September 11, 2024, at 9:00 pm EST. It will once again focus on this Florida Keys double homicide. The episode is titled The Catch and the official synopsis for the same reads as follows:
"Crime scene investigators use cutting-edge data forensic techniques to solve a double homicide that shattered a community in the Florida Keys."
Jeremy Macauley killed Carlos Ortiz and Tara Rosado
Reportedly, Jeremy Macauley was sentenced to two consecutive life sentences after he was found guilty of the murder of Carlos Ortiz and Tara Rosado as mentioned already.
As revealed on the show, Carlos Ortiz and his partner Tara Rosado were found shot in the head and murdered inside their residence. No murder weapon was retrieved from the crime scene, which made this double homicide a hard case to crack for the detectives.
However, a few weeks into the investigation a gun was recovered from a canal in Key Largo. Forensics could not retrieve fingerprints from the gun as it was submerged in water. However, the bullet casings found in the crime scene were matched and it was confirmed that it was fired from the same gun. An ASUS Zenphone found at the crime scene also had key evidence in the form of videos and chats, which led the detectives to Jeremy Macauley.
CCTV footage from the victim's neighbor's home was also recovered. The footage showed a black male arriving outside Rosado's house in a Toyota, talking to her partner, and then both of them going inside the house. In the next 4 minutes, the black male was seen coming out of the house and leaving the scene in the same car.
Events that led to the arrest of Jeremy Macauley and Adrian Demblans
Three important pieces of evidence aided the arrest of Jeremy Macauley and Adrian Demblans:
1) Video footage
As revealed on The Real CSI: Miami, the detectives found videos on Tara's phone of Jeremy showing cocaine to Carlos Ortiz and Carlos showing him a bunch of cash. Jeremy even threatened to kill Carlos however no motive could be figured out until it was revealed by the informants that Jeremy was a small-scale drug dealer.
He got hold of 12 kilos of cocaine floating in the ocean and teamed up with Carlos to sell it. Jeremy Macauley promised Carlos to fund his tattoo shop with the cocaine money. However, Carlos started using the cocaine instead of selling it, which enraged Jeremy. Therefore he went to kill Carlos and his partner.
2) The murder weapon
Another important piece of evidence was the Colt 45 1911 model pistol, which was the same gun used for killing Carols Ortiz and Tara Rosado. Jeremy was linked to the weapon after an informant showed chats of Jeremy trying to sell the same gun to him before the double homicide.
3) CCTV footage
The CCTV evidence from the neighbors' home that was later retrieved traced back to Adrian, who was driving the car that was seen outside the victims' residence a day before the murders and showed a black male at the crime scene, who happened to be Jeremy.
Jeremy Macauley's partner in crime Adrian Demblans, also confessed to the crime and confirmed to the detectives that Jeremy killed them and then he drove Jeremy out of the place. However, Adrian Demblans had no direct involvement in this killing.
Once the gun was linked to Jeremy, it was easy to arrest him. The chats showed motive and Adrian Demblans confirmed the same.
