In 2013, Hernandez was arrested on charges of murdering a man named Odin Lloyd but was immediately released. Lloyd was reportedly dating Hernadez's fiancée's sister during the time. He was again reprimanded for the same incident and sentenced to life in prison in 2015 without the possibility of parole after he was found guilty of murdering Lloyd.
During the trial for the murder of Odin Lloyd, he was also accused of committing a double homicide in 2012 involving the deaths of Daniel de Abreu and Safiro Furtado. However, he was cleared of the charges in 2017 after a trial. Days after he was pardoned from the homicide case, he was found dead in his cell. Authorities ruled out his demise as su*cide.
