The 2024 WNBA regular season is coming to an end this week, with several teams trying to end it in the best possible way. The aim is to enter the postseason with clear chances of becoming serious contenders for the championship.
On the other hand, players will try to make a last push to challenge for individual awards, although it seems like everything has been decided in multiple categories. It's time to take a look at the final Most Improved Player of the Year rankings and see who won this award in our eyes.
Top 5 WNBA MIPOY candidates
#5 Ezi Magbegor, Seattle Storm
Ezi Magbegor played and won two games with the Seattle Storm this past week, averaging 10 points per game with 5.5 rebounds and 1.5 assists. She was one of the most consistent players in the league this season, but her numbers weren't as spectacular as others.
For the season, Magbegor averages 11.7 ppg, 8.0 rpg and 2.0 apg, shooting 51.2% from the field and 87.4% from the free-throw line.
#4 Dearica Hamby, LA Sparks
Dearica Hamby started this WNBA season on a strong note, putting on remarkable performances with the LA Sparks, especially after Cameron Brink's season was cut short in June. The veteran forward posted 14.3 ppg, 7.3 rpg and 4.0 apg in three losses last week.
She's played 38 games this season, averaging 17.1 ppg, 9.3 rpg and 3.5 apg, shooting 50.9% from the field.
#3 Kahleah Copper, Phoenix Suns
Kahleah Copper last played with the Phoenix Mercury back on Sept. 7. The veteran was the leading candidate to win this award, but her team's inconsistencies hurt her case in recent weeks. She's been dealing with a back issue, which favored the next two players on this list.
Copper is averaging 21.6 ppg, 4.6 rpg and 2.2 apg, shooting 43.8% from the field and 80.7% from the free-throw line for the struggling Mercury.
#2 Chennedy Carter, Chicago Sky
Chennedy Carter has been the best player on the Chicago Sky roster this season, becoming a starter after joining the team with a training camp deal. The guard has tried to make an impact on her team's chances to reach the WNBA playoffs, averaging 17.7 ppg, 3.3 rpg and 1.3 apg last week. Unfortunately, the Sky couldn't win their three games.
Carter is only 25 and just posted her best season to date, putting on 17.5 ppg, 3.5 rpg, 3.1 apg and 1.1 spg in 33 games for Chicago. She's shooting 48.7% from the field and 73% from the free-throw line.
#1 DiJonai Carrington, Connecticut Sun
DiJonai Carrington was expected to be one of the candidates to win this award before the start of the 2024 WNBA season. The Connecticut Sun's defensive specialist played three games last week, winning two. She averaged 10.0 ppg, 6.0 rpg and 2.0 apg for the No. 2 seed in the WNBA standings.
Carrington has been a key piece in the Sun's remarkable season, doing her job and taking her opportunities whenever she had the chance. She averages 12.7 ppg, 4.9 rpg, 1.5 apg and 1.6 spg in 37 games.
Carrington showed a lot of progression in her game this season and she is, in our opinion, the deserving winner of this award.
