Ahead of their home matchup against the Seattle Storm on Thursday, New York Liberty star Courtney Vandersloot arrived at the venue wearing a custom Kamala Harris T-shirt. Liberty's X handle shared snaps of Vandersloot's fit with the caption, "The General gets it!"
WNBA fans were unhappy with Courtney Vandersloot's custom tee supporting the presidential candidate, with many citing that it's not a good practice to incorporate politics into the sport.
"Should not be political on company time. It’s bad business," a fan tweeted.
"Political stuff ruins it for everybody," a fan tweeted.
"Can we just watch sports instead of everything being political," a fan tweeted.
The comments continued:
"Please stay out of politics the league is on the rise this is not the moment for this," a fan tweeted.
"This is what not to do when your trying to grow your sport," a fan tweeted.
"Can we just keep politics out of sports. This is a big reason why the wnba has failed for so many years. It's no promotion, clearly you all don't know anything about marketing," a fan tweeted.
A few fans supported Vandersloot's choice.
"Let’s get the entire damn @WNBA on board and speak out with Hoops For Harris through," a fan wrote.
"This shirt hits hard ! Love it," another added.
Thursday's game concluded with the New York Liberty clinching a 77-70 win. Courtney Vandersloot recorded three points, two rebounds, five assists, two steals and one block.
How is Courtney Vandersloot faring this season?
Courtney Vandersloot's production has dipped in her 14th season. The veteran guard is averaging 6.9 points, 2.8 rebounds and 5.0 assists in 23.2 minutes of action. She's shooting 46.1% from the field, including 31.0% from deep.
The former WNBA champion's dip in efficiency may be in part due to her personal loss earlier in the season. Courtney's mother, Jan, died in June after a two-year battle with cancer, following which the four-time All-WNBA player missed eight games.
Despite the dip in efficiency, Vandersloot remains a key player.
Meanwhile, the New York Liberty lead the WNBA standings with a 28-6 record. They have won eight of their last 10 games and are riding a two-game winning streak after defeating the Seattle Storm on Thursday.
The Liberty have six games left in the regular season and will play the reigning champions, the Las Vegas Aces, on Sunday.
