On Wednesday, A'ja Wilson headed to the locker room before the LA Sparks-Las Vegas Aces matchup came to a close. Shortly after the Aces lost 97-89 to the Sparks, an update on Wilson's early exit has emerged.
As per Yahoo Sports, the reigning WNBA MVP sustained a head injury that caused the Aces to shut her down for the rest of the game.
While there are no further details on the severity of Wilson's injury, it's possible that a defensive play might have led to it.
At one point in the third quarter, Wilson went up to challenge a layup attempt from Sparks forward Dearica Hamby. In this sequence, Hamby's offhand caught Wilson in the face, causing the Aces star to stagger backwards.
Though Wilson stayed in the game for a few more minutes, she ended up leaving before the third quarter came to a close. Even with her abrupt departure, the two-time WNBA champion still had an all-around game of 13 points, eight rebounds, five assists, two steals, and four blocks.
The bigger story of the game, however, was the Sparks' hot start and their composure to stave off the home team. LA opened the game with a 29-17 at the end of the first 10 minutes and, though the Aces tried to chip away at this deficit throughout the game, the Sparks also pulled off a strong finish to secure the eight-point lead.
Wednesday marks the fourth loss in the Aces' season, as well as the first time this year that the team has lost back-to-back games. Fans of the team await further updates as Las Vegas gets stuck in the middle of the Western Conference standings.
Aces HC Becky Hammon offers update on A'ja Wilson during post-game interview
After the Aces' loss to the Sparks, head coach Becky Hammon provided an update on what her star player might do over the next 24 hours.
It's likely that this trip to the doctor will yield a diagnosis, which would set a timetable for Wilson's return. Time, however, is not exactly a luxury for the Aces as their 4-4 record does not bode well for their playoff aspirations.
