WNBA rookie sensation Angel Reese suffered a season-ending wrist injury on Friday. The injury occurred late in Chicago Sky's win with just three minutes left in the third quarter. As Reese went for a layup, she collided with another player and hit the ground. As she did, she put her hands down to break her fall.
While she didn't show any signs of an injury, she was seen moments later in the game holding her wrist, indicating something was wrong. After making it clear that her season was over, news on Tuesday indicated Reese had undergone surgery.
A report from Underdog Sports says Reese underwent surgery on her wrist early Tuesday morning. Although it's unclear exactly what bone the rookie standout broke in her wrist, the injury has been described as a hairline fracture.
While surgery wasn't mandatory, Reese explained in a TikTok before Underdog's surgery confirmation that she was at risk of developing arthritis during recovery without surgery.
As a result, the Chicago Sky star has decided to end her season and do what's best for her health despite the team being in playoff contention.
Angel Reese outlines timeline for recovery after season-ending injury
Although Angel Reese's recent wrist injury has ended her 2024 WNBA season, she will return to her usual workout routines sooner rather than later.
She explained in a TikTok video on Monday before undergoing surgery that doctors would put a screw into her bone to ensure the injury doesn't get worse.
“I’m going to be in a hard cast for four weeks and then I’m going to be in a soft cast for two weeks that Is removable and then I’m back. So, six weeks I’ll be back to doing my own thing, normal life,” she added.
“So in the meantime I will just be in my hard cast for four weeks … during that time I’ll just be lifting, running, conditioning, shooting with my offhand, dribbling and doing stuff with my offhand, working on my nutrition."
Despite the injury, Reese clarified she still plans to be on the bench at Chicago Sky games as the team continues to pursue a playoff spot. The team is on a two-game win streak, sitting one game ahead of the ninth-place Atlanta Dream.
The team will play against the Washington Mystics on Wednesday in a pivotal game to keep its playoff hopes alive.
