Breanna Stewart and the New York Liberty moved closer to finishing with the best record in the WNBA on Tuesday. New York’s 105-91 win over the Dallas Wings pushed its record to 30-6, four games ahead of the second-placed Minnesota Lynx. “Stewie” was again at the forefront of the Liberty’s game plan on both ends of the floor.
Stewart immediately set the tone for the Liberty after tip-off. She scored 15 first-quarter points as New York rolled to an early 28-18 advantage. The reigning MVP added four more points in the second quarter as her team widened the gap to 58-43 leading into the halftime break.
New York's leading MVP contender this year also got her teammates involved when Dallas’ defense collapsed on her. She only had two assists after the third quarter, but she was the hub of the offense for most of the game. Stewart had several hockey passes that allowed her teammates to get open looks at the basket.
Breanna Stewart poured it on again in the third quarter to take the fight out of the Dallas Wings. She added six more points to raise her tally to 25 in 24 minutes. New York led 87-69 heading into the fourth quarter. The Wings, despite having two 6-foot-7 centers, had no answer for “Stewie.”
Breanna Stewart returned to play the final 4:51 to close out the Wings. She finished the game with 27 points on 9-for-18 shooting, including 3-for-6 from deep. The New York Liberty superstar added two rebounds, two assists and one steal.
Breanna Stewart and the Liberty look ready to make another deep playoff run
Breanna Stewart and the New York Liberty picked up where they left off once the WNBA resumed action after the Olympic break. The Liberty had a 21-4 record before the month-long respite. They hold a 9-2 mark after the win against the Dallas Wings to improve their league-best tally to 30-6.
A win by the Liberty in their next four games would likely give them the No. 1 seed in the WNBA playoffs. They do have a game against their nemesis, the Minnesota Lynx on Sunday, which could be a preview of the finals. After the Lynx encounter, Stewart and Co. will take on the Washington Mystics and the Atlanta Dream, two teams desperately looking to earn a playoff spot.
Behind Breanna Stewart, the New York Liberty look ready for another deep playoff run. After last year’s disappointing loss to the Las Vegas Aces in the WNBA Finals, the Liberty have been almost unbeatable this season.
New York has been the most consistent team on both ends of the floor in 2024. The Liberty are serious challengers to dethrone the Aces.
