Kate Martin got nostalgic recalling her first meeting with WNBA legend Sue Bird on Friday's episode of the "Bird's Eye View" podcast. Bird showed Martin a video of her surprise visit to a Hawkeyes game, where she met Martin and Caitlin Clark.
The Seattle Storm icon said she was nervous during the visit and asked Martin what she remembered from the event.
"I just remember Caitlin being like so suspicious, being like, 'Yeah somebody's coming. Somebody's coming.' We were like, 'Who is coming?' but we knew we were in Climate Pledge," Martin said (Timestamp: 6:30).
Martin added that someone on the Hawkeyes squad guessed the surprise guest was Bird, but they were not sure. So when the Storm legend popped up, everyone was stunned by her presence.
Later, the Valkyries star expressed her gratitude to Bird for her role in the growth of women's basketball and for inspiring many young children to pursue a basketball career.
Kate Martin praises A'ja Wilson's leadership skills while recalling her time on the Aces
The Las Vegas Aces drafted Kate Martin with the 18th pick in the 2024 draft. In another segment of Friday's episode of Bird's podcast, Sue Bird asked her about her experience on the Aces and for her thoughts on A'ja Wilson's leadership skills.
"I would say, A'ja took the brunt of every loss, she felt that and she took ownership and that's hard to do," she said (Timestamp: 39:45).
"When you're that good and when you are an MVP and a back-to-back world champions and being able to take getting yelled at too whenever you're the best in the league, a lot of people don't handle that well and she handles that with grace."
The Valkyries star further explained that Wilson's ability to take constructive criticism set an example for the entire locker room to do the same and follow in her footsteps.
