Chennedy Carter was a welcome boost to the Chicago Sky outfit that's fighting for a playoff berth when they took on the LA Sparks at the Wintrust Arena on Friday. With the Atlanta Dream winning the matchup against the Dallas Wings earlier, the Sky needed to win against the Sparks and arrest their seven-game losing streak to stand a chance of making the postseason, and they did just that.
The guard, who entered the league's health and safety protocols with an illness was named in the starting unit vs LA, and she started on a promising note. She ended her evening with 15 points, nine rebounds and seven assists as the Sky kept their postseason hopes alive with a 92-78 win.
At halftime, Carter had racked up nine points leading the Sky's scoring, playing the second most minutes (15:53) after Angel Reese. With her back in the mix, Chicago was seen playing with more pace and the offense flowed through her. At halftime, they had managed to carve out a 48-42 lead.
Chennedy Carter has been a key weapon in the Sky's offense this season. The senior guard leads the side in scoring with 17.2 points, coupled with 3.3 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 1.1 steals and 0.2 blocks in 28 games so far. She's shooting at a healthy 50.0% from the field, 27.3% from the deep and 74.5% from the charity stripe.
Chennedy Carter sounds warning shot ahead of taking the floor
Earlier, Chennedy Carter sounded ready for action when she spoke to the media ahead of the game versus the Sparks. The guard knew what was at stake on Friday, and looked ready for action. Following the team's practice session on Thursday, she said:
“I’m back now and I’m ready to work with you guys. I miss you guys. I wanna make a run [at the playoffs]. I’m here to do that. Let’s f**king do it. Let’s turn the page, let’s forget about these last couple of games and let’s worry about the next couple that we have.”
The Chicago Sky is one of the teams in the playoff hunt and the win improves them to 12-22, the same record as the Dream. They will need to string up more wins and hope that Atlanta drops a game or two to ease their chances of making the playoffs. Up next, Chennedy Carter and the Sky play the Dallas Wings, followed by the Washington Mystics.
