The Golden State Valkyrie faced off against the LA Sparks in a WNBA Commissioner’s Cup matchup at Crypto.com Arena on Monday. Kate Martin’s Valkyries entered the contest with a 3-5 record while Kelsey Plum’s Sparks stood at 3-6.

Golden State opened the game with a starting lineup of Kayla Thornton, Janelle Salaun, Temi Fagbenle, Julie Vanloo and Veronica Burton. Meanwhile, the Sparks began with Rickea Jackson, Dearica Hamby, Azura Stevens, Kelsey Plum and Odyssey Sims.

The Valkyries came out strong in the first quarter, with Fagbenle setting the tone offensively by scoring four quick buckets to give her team an early edge. However, the Sparks responded behind veteran forward Hamby, who carried the scoring load with nine points to bring the home team back and reduce the deficit to 25-23 at halftime.

The second quarter saw the Sparks mount a late surge, seizing their first lead of the game as Kelsey Plum caught fire, racking up 14 points by halftime. Riding that momentum, the Sparks headed into the break with a 44-40 advantage.

The third quarter turned into a back-and-forth battle, with both teams trading blows. The Valkyries briefly regained the lead thanks to a stellar all-around performance from Janelle Salaün. However, the Sparks responded with resilience, keeping the game level at 65-65 heading into the final period.

The intensity carried into the fourth quarter as the game remained tightly contested. With just 17 seconds left on the clock, the score was knotted at 78-78, forcing the matchup into overtime after neither side could seal the win in regulation.

In the extra period, the Valkyries took complete control, dominating the five-minute stretch. Outscoring the Sparks 11-3 in overtime, the visiting team secured an impressive 89-81 victory.
