The LA Sparks and Chicago Sky squared off on Friday at Wintrust Arena. The teams went back and forth the first few minutes and were tied 10-10 heading into the first timeout with 4:07 left in the first quarter.
Chennedy Carter gave the struggling Sky offense a much-needed boost in her injury return. She scored four quick points in six minutes while adding three rebounds. Meanwhile, Azura Stevens was the Sparks' most efficient contributor to start things off.
The Sparks went up 19-13, with their pace and size causing problems for the Sky, who benched Carter early in the game. A 6-1 run by the Sky after coach Teresa Weatherspoon's timeout reduced the deficit to 20-19 heading into the second quarter.
The Sparks' hot shooting continued, but the Sky matched them stride for stride. After going up 30-24, the Sparks gave up another run to Chicago, who closed the game to 32-31 with 6:22 left. Both teams shot 50.0% until that point.
The Chicago Sky didn't take long to restore their lead. An 18-5 run going back to the first quarter put them up 40-35. The Sky did a better job than the Sparks in sustaining their offense and improved their shooting to 54.3%. Carter and Lindsay Allen were key to that, as they combined for seven assists in the first half.
Meanwhile, Rickea Jackson's 14 points kept the Sparks afloat as they entered the second half trailing 48-42.
The Sparks came out of the halftime break firing on all cylinders. They went on an 8-2 run to cut the lead to 50-48. However, the Sky woke up just in time to control things. They extended their lead to a game-high 12 points (64-52) with just under five minutes left in the quarter.
The Sky kept the pressure on and didn't allow the Sparks a way back into the contest for the rest of the third. Kamilla Cardoso hit a 17-foot jump shot to close the frame with a 75-61 lead for the Sky.
The Chicago Sky continued their onslaught in the fourth. The Sparks didn't do enough to threaten the Sky's 14+ point lead, which went up to 18, at any stage in the final frame.
The Sky won the contest 92-78, snapping a seven-game losing streak. Angel Reese dropped 24 points and 12 rebounds, shooting 60.0%, while Chennedy Carter finished with 15 points, nine rebounds and seven assists.
Kamilla Cardoso also had a high-production game, bagging 12 points, nine rebounds and five blocks.
Meanwhile, the Sparks didn't get much out of anyone but Rickea Jackson and Dearica Hamby, who scored 17 and 21 points, respectively.
