Angel Reese sent a heartfelt message to A'ja Wilson after the Las Vegas Aces superstar set a new record for the most points scored in a single WNBA season. In the second quarter of the duel against the Indiana Fever on Wednesday, Wilson scored 12 points and broke Jewell Loyd's previous record (939).
Wilson played at a high level, leading her team to beat the Fever at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. On Thursday, Reese congratulated Wilson on X (formerly known as Twitter).
"CONGRATS A! You deserve this! Forever & always my favorite player!! 🙏🏽🔥💐," Reese tweeted.
These two have shared a close connection over the years, which has been more visible now that both compete in the WNBA.
In June, Reese became the first rookie since Wilson in 2018 to have at least 25 points and 15 rebounds in a single game (25 points and 16 rebounds against the Indiana Fever) while also becoming the second player to have more than one game with at least 15 points and 15 rebounds this campaign.
“I love A’ja [Wilson]. She mentored me when I was in Maryland. Just continuing to watch her game,” Reese said in June.
A'ja Wilson has given Angel Reese her flowers before
Just like Angel Reese has expressed her admiration for A'ja Wilson, the veteran has done the same with the rookie. In the post-game conference following a 95-83 win over the Chicago Sky in June, Wilson had some nice things to say about Reese's performance that night (18 points and 11 rebounds).
"I feel like we got some growth that we can learn when it comes to guarding her and defending her, but obviously, she held her own," Wilson said.
More recently, when Reese announced that her season was ending due to a wrist injury, Wilson commented with two white heart emojis to show support.
While Wilson is entering her prime, Reese is just starting her career. They could star in many duels for years, creating a new rivalry in the W.
Wilson still has four more games this month, and her brand-new record can get even higher.
