Sabrina Ionescu took the court in perhaps the most important game of her life. The New York Liberty star entered the game coming off an underwhelming Game 4 of the WNBA Finals.
Ionescu and the Liberty had a slow start as the Lynx took a 6-0 lead, leaving the Liberty scoreless in the first three and a half minutes. Ionescu did not attempt a shot until the four-minute mark in the game.
She attempted a 3-point shot and another 2-point that she missed. Ionescu ended the first quarter scoreless. Her scoring drought continued and ended the first half without scoring a point. She missed all of her 8 shots from the field.
Ionescu never found her footing on the offensive end in the game. She played 40 minutes in the overtime win and scored just 5 points. The Liberty star made just one of 19 shots from the field and 1 of 10 from the 3-point range.
However, the Liberty star contributed in other crucial ways. She had 8 assists in the game, along with two steals and a block.
Sabrina Ionescu opens up about her Game 3-winning shot
Sabrina Ionescu arguably made the biggest shot of her career in Game 3 of the 23-24 WNBA Finals. The New York Liberty star had the ball in her hands with just over 3 seconds remaining and shot a 28-footer to seal an 80-77 win for the team.
After the game, she told reporters she didn't even remember the distance. She also added she had gotten the green signal from coach Sandy Brondello to take the shot.
"I didn’t even really remember it," Ionescu told reporters after the game. "I had to go look at the video to see how far I was. But in the timeout, Sandy was just like, 'You’re gonna shoot this shot.' I was able to get some separation in range, and I let the shot go."
The Liberty star also added that when she is practicing, she frequently visualizes such shots in such situations.
"I visualize a lot when I’m practicing, in the offseason, the day before the game — putting myself in those situations… and that’s been a big growth for me," she added.
Sabrina Ionescu is one of the best long-range 3-point shooters in the league, if not the best. She also later added that it was the biggest shot of her career.
