Jason Whitlock has labeled Angel Reese an "embarrassment" to the WNBA after the Chicago Sky superstar was named BET Sportswoman of the Year.
Reese won the award for the second consecutive year, beating the likes of A'ja Wilson, Dawn Staley, Flau'jae Johnson, Coco Gauff, JuJu Watkins, Sha'Carri Richardson and Simone Biles.
Whitlock, an avid critic of Reese, criticized her on his "Fearless with Jason Whitlock" show on Wednesday.
“Angel Reese. The woman with a retarded offensive basketball game," Whitlock said. “A woman who’s an absolute embarrassment to the WNBA because she’s getting so much attention, and she’s so unskilled.”
Whitlock claimed that Angel Reese’s rise was less about talent and more about controversy.
“She confirms nearly every stereotype about women’s basketball, that it's hot garbage and hot trash but she’s the winner of the award over A’ja Wilson?.... This woman, who can barely make layups, is named Sportswoman of the Year. Why? Because she antagonizes white Christian men and conservatives. She trolls Caitlin Clark.”
“And so what is in the best interest of Black people and Black women is put on the back burner so we control Caitlin Clark. So we can control white men. So we can antagonize and annoy white people. That’s the agenda of black women, particularly feminist black women.”
Reese has blown hot and cold in her sophomore year, struggling to build off her rookie season. The Sky are 2-6 under a new coach and an almost entirely new team around the power forward. Reese has shown flashes of rebounding brilliance, but has struggled offensively, leading to criticism from analysts like Whitlock.
Angel Reese seemingly sends message to haters amid slump
Angel Reese appears to have grown tired of critics weighing in on every aspect of her life. The 23-year-old WNBA star, no stranger to sharing strong opinions, sent a clear message after the Sky's 85-66 loss to the defending champion New York Liberty on Wednesday.
She uploaded 14 pictures on Instagram with the caption:
"Every successful person you admire survived a season you didn’t see. Idols turn into rivals. Everything becomes about survival."
In the image carousel, Reese snuck in four cryptic messages, one featuring the iconic LeBron James meme:
"Smiling through it all! Can’t believe this is my life."
Another read, "Imagine hating me and I like it."
The third referenced the famous "Three Wise Monkeys" proverb:
"Hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil."
And the last one stated:
"I will never forget those who came with a lamp when I was in the dark."
The Sky are going through an early-season crisis, and coach Tyler Marsh has multiple areas to address if his team is to turn things around. They play the Atlanta Dream on Friday.
