The Washington Mystics, led by Aaliyah Edwards, pulled off an upset 89-58 win over the Angel Reese-less Chicago Sky on Wednesday at Wintrust Arena. The loss further dents the Sky's chances of making the playoffs as the No. 8 seed as they fall to 13-23, just one win more than the Atlanta Dream (12-24). Their offense sputtered and they sorely missed the rebounding Reese brought to the table in a game that could have inched them closer to a postseason berth.
Chennedy Carter continued to be the primary scoring weapon for the Sky with 16 points and two rebounds. Kamilla Cardoso had 13 points and eight rebounds, and Isabelle Harrison (10 points) were the only two other players in double-digits as Chicago suffered a 31-point blowout loss.
Turnovers proved to be the major decisive factor as the Sky turned the ball over 15 times compared to Washington's 11. They were held at their own rebounding game as Reese's absence was notable on that front. With three of their solid players on the sidelines, the Sky were heavily reliant on Carter to do the bulk of the scoring. Cardoso looked impressive, but her efforts went in vain as the Sky suffered a massive loss.
The Mystics, well out of playoff contention and nothing but pride to play for were clinical on both ends of the floor with Edwards leading the way. The forward had a double-double outing with 15 points and 10 rebounds. She was ably assisted by Brittney Sykes with 14 points, eight rebounds, and seven assists.
Sika Kone came off the bench to drop 11 points and five boards. It was their defense that shored up when mattered as they held the Sky to less than 60 points.
