A'ja Wilson’s historic season continued on Sunday against the Connecticut Sun. The heavy favorite to win the MVP award this season had 971 points leading into the showdown against the Sun. Wilson’s 29th point of the night and 1,000th of the season came with 1:57 left in the game.
Las Vegas Aces coach Becky Hammon designed the play for the reigning WNBA Finals MVP. Wilson caught the ball from the elbow before sinking an 11-foot pullup jumper. She has become the first player in league history to breach the 1,000-point mark.
Hammon called a timeout five plays later as the Aces’ players, coaching staff and fans celebrated the achievement. A'ja Wilson couldn’t hold back her tears as she hugged her teammates. She went to center court to soak in the appreciation of the home crowd and to thank her supporters.
Wilson’s performance on Sunday against a team with the best defensive rating in the WNBA was an exclamation point to the season. The Connecticut Sun threw the kitchen sink at her but their defense hardly slowed her down. She finished the game with 29 points on 13-for-25 shooting and added nine rebounds, three assists and two blocks.
Connecticut’s inability to consistently stop A'ja Wilson has been a common theme around in the league this season. Wilson is averaging a career-high 27.0 points per game, the best in the WNBA, on 51.9% shooting.
A'ja Wilson should add more to her single-season scoring record before the playoffs
The Las Vegas Aces (25-13) are trying to hold off the Seattle Storm (24-14) for the fourth seed in the playoffs. With home-court advantage at stake, A'ja Wilson and Co. will be going all-out for wins in their remaining two games. The showdown against the Storm on Tuesday will be particularly interesting as the winner could host the other in the postseason.
Because of the importance of the games, Wilson should add more to her total. Las Vegas needs its best scorer to carry the team again. As the focal point of the offense, it wouldn’t be surprising to see her pad her already historic single-season points total.
The Aces’ final regular season game could be more exciting than usual. The Dallas Wings are already out of the playoff hunt but Las Vegas will be pushing for another win. A'ja Wilson is averaging 35.5 points per game against the Wings this season so she could be up for another big scoring night.
